I couldn't deposit into wife's account without card

I went to my local bank today to make a deposit into my wife's account, but forgot her bank card.

The bank said I couldn't do it.

Surely they could look up the details and put the money in ... ?

Nope

Is this correct ? seems a bit 'over the top' to me.

    Which bank?

Edit oh it wasn't that you didn't have her card ...it was that you didn't have her account details?
    In which case completely correct.
It's not your account it's hers.

You wouldn't want to use somebody else's card anywhere, and certainly not at a bank counter. The owner of the card would violate the T&Cs and risk having their account closed if the bank picked up on someone else using the card.

you just need the sort code and account number, just like you used to when using a paying-in slip.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

It is correct, they can't just give out a customers details willy nilly, no matter who you claim to be!!

It would be a breach of data security, how would you feel if someone pretended to be you and without verifying your details and confirming it was you, your bank gave out all your details.

You would be furious and not to mention making a complaint.

So the bank have followed their procedures and quite rightly not given out any details to a complete stranger!!
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.
  • As has been pointed out the fact that you didn't have her bank card is not the relevant issue here. What you needed was her sort code and account number.

I have paid money into my son's account on numerous occasions with just this information and had no problems at all. The bank did exactly the right thing by not disclosing her personal information to you. After all you wouldn't expect them to disclose your information to someone else. It's called data protection.... Make sure you have her details the next time you try and do this. Also remember lots of bank cards do not have the account details printed on them these days for security reasons.

Almost no debit cards don't show sort code and account number these days (I know, I have over 30 of them). There is no security risk. Cheques had sort code and account number printed on them for decades, and billions of cheques have been handed over by billions of people with no risk to security.

Natwest debit cards only show sort code and NOT account number

I always wondered about this. Can't anyone just set up a DD using my account number and sort code? Is there anything preventing someone from doing that?

I'd probably notice an incorrect DD in my online banking or in the statements. But what if the account owner is not checking the statements every few days.

Yes and 'sort of' - the Direct Debit guarantee can't prevent it from happening but can guarantee reversal if requested.
