Hi all
So im in need of advice and figured this is thr best place to post.
I need to make meals for 2 days for a cost of no more than £3.00.
I only have a tesco within distance. Everywhere else is a good hour away.
I have kidney beans, barlotti beans and baked beans in the cupboard along with some rice ( about 3 portions) and 1 egg.
Any ideas as to what i could make/buy.

Hi GrumpyD,
How many people are you feeding, and do you need three meals or fewer for all of them? For one person, I think this is doable in the short-term. This is how I would go about it for one person. However, I would strongly urge you to explore the rest of the forum for ideas about raising a bit more (i.e. clubcard points, selling etc.) and then explore ways to avoid being in this situation in the future as eating this way won't be healthy. I wish you the best.
For starters, I'd go with a wholemeal loaf at (.47)
An onion (.16)
Jam (.29)
Spring Onions (.49)
Garlic (.30)
Eggs (.89)* optional. Could use more to supplement lunches and breakfast, or could replace this with fresh fruit and veg.
According to Tesco online, this should come to £2.60. I'd use the remaining .40 for any loose fresh fruit or veg you feel would compliment the food--i.e. carrot for batons, banana etc. Lunch on the second day may be particularly light.
Menu
Breakfast:
Toast with jam
Lunch: Baked Beans on Toast, or Boiled Egg and Soldiers or, Make a salad with left over spring onions, garlic, Barlotti Beans and Rice
Dinner: Make this recipe, eat it both evenings:
http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/kidney-beans-and-rice-recipe-00000000028962/
If you only have on tin of Kidney beans, you could add the barlotti beans to the above recipe and double the rice. However, as I said before this makes your lunch that day fairly light. This is not nutritionally balanced. It does not have enough fresh fruit and veg, and I don't think it is calorically or nutritionally adequate. However, for a day or two it will get you through.0 -
Thanks thats great.
Sorry shoukd have specified that it was only for me.
Reason i have only 3.00 is due to me loosing my wallet earlier.0 -
go down the back of the settee, in all the drawers, in coats and bags you haven't used for a while, in case you can find any more moneyYou're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0

Maybe an approximation of Mexican bean soup? http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/spicy_mexican_bean_soup_91809 You'd need some tinned value tomatoes, maybe if you can get loose chillies to give it a kick?
Curried boiled eggs are surprisingly nice if you have any spice, this recipe is more complicated than it needs to be, tomatoes, spice and boiled eggs is all it needs http://www.perrysplate.com/2012/01/egg-curry-yes-im-serious.html0 -
Nothing else in at all? No butter or margarine, no herbs, stock cubes, frozen peas or anything in the freezer?
1 onion (15p)
1 tin tomatoes (40p)
1 can kidney beans
1 stock cube (25p for a packet of them)
tsp chilli powder if you've got it, salt and pepper
optional extras you might have around: other spices (especially paprika or cumin), garlic, a carrot, knob of butter
Loaf of bread (47p+)
Total £1.27
--- That gives you enough kidney bean soup for 2 lunches, easily, with the bread.
Plenty of bread left from that for toast for breakfast if you've got butter or margarine.
--Then I'd make a bean and veg chilli with the borlotti beans, plus another onion, another stock cube, another tin of tomatoes and whatever veg you can buy with the remaining £1.18 Perhaps 2 carrots (about 28p) and a pack of mushrooms (79p). Needs cumin, garlic and chilli powder as a minimum really, but use anything you've got. Might end up as more of a stew, I suppose, if there's no actual chilli in it! Serve it with the rice.
The bean chilli comes to £1.62 and should make plenty for 2 dinners.
And you've now got egg, baked beans (and mushrooms, if you chose to buy them) on toast left to switch with whatever meal you don't fancy having twice.
Grand total £2.89Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0 -
I would buy...
(all tesco value)
1 pack spaghetti 20p
1 soft cheese 49p
1 tin curry sauce 20p
1 jar pasta sauce 39p
1 wholemeal loaf. (or white. Same price!) 47p
1 stork margarine. 69p
1 jar jam 29p
as many loose onions as you can get for 27p (probably two or three) It comes to three pounds exactly.
Three meals a day. same every day. Monotonous but not too unhealthy for a short time.
Curry. (dinner)
Fry half the onions in a knob of stork until brown. Add the kidney beans, barlotti beans and jar of curry sauce.
Three portions. one each day with rice.
Spaghetti. (lunch)
Use the stork to fry onions until translucent. Add the jar of pasta sauce and baked beans.
Serve with a third of the cream cheese and spaghetti.
Jam and toast for breakfast, and one egg sandwich whenever you want it.
Portion out the rice, bread and spaghetti into three before you start. It is very easy to misjudge the amount and end up with too little on the last day.
Best of luck.0 -
Thankyou all for your suggestions. Looks like i wont be going hungry now.0

I'm glad you have options. OS posters can come up with some excellent lists! Don't forget to check for yellow sticker items first--you never know, you may get your bread reduced to 10p.
Might I suggest that when your wallet situation is sorted out you look into creating a basic store cupboard? If you cook regularly a supply of the basics would help in situations like this. If not, then a few tins of soup, tuna etc. might be worth getting in.0
