Superdrug clearly label which of the many) toiletries are suitable for vegans, Ocado is good for ordering vegan foods and publish a toiletries sfv list, as do Sainsburys

Thank you all for the ongoing support and information :D I have been reading all the links posted and planning, planning, planning.

So far I have been following a vegetarian diet with many vegan meals and a couple of consciously vegan days a week. I have also replaced some cosmetics that were finished with vegan cosmetics.

I am determined to do this properly so I am taking my time :)

Did anyone mention vegankit.com? It's pretty comprehensive.

    Interesting.

Personally I try and stick exclusively with organic meat and in the future when i'm more established i'd like to think i'll be rearing or hunting my own.

My motivation is similar to others, don't like the meat industry and don't trust them with what i put into my body.

Ayway just a few points, i've heard, and this may well be wrong ,that a majority percentage of the worlds soya is now GM so best to go organic.

Also a lot of talk of fortified foods, these man-made 'vitamins' and 'minerals' are not necessarily all they claim to be. Some vitamins are very complex and man-made attempts are pretty half arsed, then again some vitamins are supposedly very easy to replicate such as vit c.

Personally I wouldn't go near fortified foods. It's to simplistic, you can't just pump synthetic vitamins and minerals into foods and expect it to perform naturally.

    Just a quick google search:

Synthetics vitamins are not a good idea in my book and s far as i know this is by and large what goes into fortified foods.

Besides it's madness to take out the good part of the grain, cover it in sugar then try and replace the good part synthetically.

It's ironic that they take the good bits out and sell the cereal to the mass public and then sell the good bits they took out to health food enthusiasts as oat bran for example! Why not just leave the good bits in in that case? :rotfl:

I guess it's more profitable their way. Food for thought. D:
  • Hi there, I made this post yesterday but have issued with my account - hopefully all sorted now. I know the OP has seen it but I just wanted to recommend Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Diet to anyone interested in even considering going Vegan - she presents all the information that you could need, right from the basics up, and gives ideas from just the odd plant based meal to how to live a full on Vegan lifestyle. I got my copy second hand from Amazon, I think, and it was well worth the few quid spent to get all of the scientifically backed up info on nutrition all in one place.

Personal my key for a plant based diet is planning and preparation! Also, ease into things gently, let yourself have plenty of plant based comfort food while you adjust so that you never feel like you're missing out - then it's really crazy how quickly your tastebuds change after you've cut out all of the meat and dairy - carrots start to taste like the sweetest thing on Earth, it really is bizarre at first!

I totally recommend anyone even trying to do it part time - you feel amazing!
  • Oooh - Vegan skincare and makeup - Superdrugs B. range. Skincare is good but I can't vouch for the makeup as I've not used it. If you like Bareminerals style makeup then a good majority of Lily Lolo makeup is vegan friendsly (although a couple of the red/pink based lippes and blushers are not - from memory these are clearly marked as such on the website)
Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!?

There are no vegan books in my local library however I have reserved some from ones within the council which I should get in a few weeks. Sadly they didn't have the one you mentions but I will keep an eye out for it in the local bookshop!
