Mortgage advice - bad credit

Hi
Me and my partner are looking to get a mortgage in the near future but my credit history is not the best (Other halfs is good).
I had a CCJ from April 2008 which is now all paid in full and also a default from 2011 which is paid off in full, all other debts from the past have been paid and nothing shows up on my credit report apart from the two above and my bank account which is in credit.
I have held down a stable job for 6 years earning 21k a year and my partner earns 15k a year from her job she has held for 8 years. We have rented private with no problems for a couple years now and have a deposit of 20k, I am first time buyer, she has had a mortgage from previous relationship that has now ended after sale of house.
My credit rating is only 597 but now all is paid off debt wise then I hope to improve this.
Any advice on the best route to take would be very appreciated.
