I see, I may have read that wrong. I'm not trying to get on the mortgage I just want something so that I can get back what I've put in if the worst were ever to happen.0

I don't think it's just being on the mortgage that could draw attention to you.
It might also be being on the Deeds.0 -
First thing to establish here is whether the girlfriend was upfront and honest when taking out the mortgage.
Has the OP signed a deed of postponement?
If he is to apply to get on the deeds and mortgage (I can see the mortgage company wanting a say on this) he will be credit checked - this could be a problem.0
