Some LM local trains have no first class accommodation including some of those between Birmingham and Wolverhampton

I don't think you are entitled to a refund - I don't see how it could be calculated anyway. You paid a correct fare for the journey you did and you got the ticket you asked for. Maybe the clerk should have said BTW it's not first class all the way. - do you still want to buy it? OTH maybe he didn't know - the non first class sections are well outside his local area

However a complaint (to London Midland, who manage Watford Junction) about the ticket selling process might produce some ex gratia vouchers

Looking at the National Rail website for that trip shows that first class is not available from Birmingham. Both the London Midland and Arriva have a note next to it saying "This train has Standard Class seating only"

Looks like the fair has been priced with this in mind. The station you booked it at should have told you first class isn't available for the whole route.

I may just contact London Midland - you never know! I bought the ticket in Llandudno Junction so the ticket office knew little about the route. When I refer to 'it' I mean the ticket which states 1st Advance Watford Junction to Gobowen so as I rarely travel on the train and as when I travel from North Wales 1st class has been all the way, I assumed this was the always the case unless told otherwise. Thanks for all the advice.
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!

    Why contact London Midland?

If you feel the details of the journey was not made clear to you, then contact Arriva Trains Wales, who manage Llandudno Junction station.

Because dzug1 suggested it? It is such a pain when you purchase a single ticket with 3 operators providing the service!!

At the time Dzug made that suggestion it was reasonable to assume that you had bought your ticket at your departure point. It only became apparent afterwards that you made the purchase in North Wales.

I usually buy online so I can easily see what services are advertised as being available for each train, however if you choose to use a ticket office, I will say this....

Some booking clerks are absolutely superb, but some are among the grumpiest, most unhelpful customer-facing staff I have ever encountered. It's a lottery as to the quality of service you get across the network.

I have friends who do mystery shopping (I don't;0ATOCs rates are too low) as well as friends who work - or have worked - in booking offices, and suffice to say I know the service can be very variable to say the least. Some booking clerk seem to want their jobs to be abolished!
