Student I.D card V NUS card, difference is? (carer needs to know)

(the person named isn`t the person asking, just to clear up)

just wondering, what the difference is between the 2 cards, as i`m a carer we are treat like 2nd class citizens when it comes to discounts, for example unemployed & students get discounts at theatre & cinema a carer (on there own) doesn`t as where not "unemployed" but get discount if we go with the person we look after, but they must like the film i want to see (which they don`t)

some places give student discount when you show "student id card" some when you show "NUS card"

i want to know, cause to save money i want to enrol at college on a "free" course to get a card (but not to go as i can`t)

any help, thanks/

Why would a carer expect a discount when they aren't with the person being cared for?

What you seem to be saying is: You want to defraud theatres and cinemas by pretending to be a student when you're not and, to facilitate this, you want to inconvenience a college by lying to them as well, and putting them to all the trouble of enrolling you and keeping a place for you, even though you don't plan to attend? Have I got that right?

This board is for saving money, not for scamming it from others.

    I hope that was helpful.

not really but i`ll reply to you...

the reason i would EXPECT a discount is, what is the difference between ME and somebody who is unemployed??

do they have to care for there parent, do they have to wipe the !!!! of there mums backside (i have to buy my own gloves for that), do they have to feed there mum do they have to bath and dress there own mother, do they get up 3-4 times during the night to look after there mother.... want me to go on? (something i don`t think your familiar with as you got home carers to look after your mother)

now what does somebody who is unemployed have to do for there money... sign on every 2 weeks, say they have been looking for a job, but in all honesty most of them have been sat at home, or sat in a pub drinking and smoking.

and you wonder why I WANT DISCOUNT the same as people on the dole

and come to think of it then, why should a student get money off, if most of them can afford to drink and smoke then why do they need a free drink in subway?

for the last 25 years i have been a carer since my last few weeks at primary school, i worked full time when i was younger then 10 years ago i had to leave work to become a full time carer, i went on "the dole" then one day was told as i`m a carer i should change benefits, as it wouldn`t make any difference to my money, but would mean i wouldn`t have to sign on any more.

carers are NOT unemployed they are CARERS yet we don`t exist, next time you fill in form and see "unemployed/not working" look for the option you`ll never see "carer"

I can see Biggles point, what you are potentially planning to do is fraud.

While I have sympathy for your situation, the discounts that you are referring to are designed for particular groups, of which you are not one of them.

My advice would be to look at other benefits that you may be able to claim, without defrauding the system and leaving yourself open to possible prosecution.

Student Cards you usually get from you uni basically for ID to get in you the library etc... But they prove that you are a student so work just aswell as an NUS card and work in most places that ask for an NUS card. I havent got an NUS card and have yet to be rejected my discount.

I've never heard of anyone was "unemployed" being able to get a discount in high street stores or cinemas?

Secondly students get discounts because the stores want to aim there sales at this particular target market, I am a student myself. My accommodation is paid for by my student loan, my food/other living costs are paid for by me working part time whilst studying. Saving ten percent on a t-shirt is still loose change.

I appreciate the situation you are in, and pray I don't have to be a full time carer for my parents. Enrolling on a free course would still incur costs, maybe not to you as an individual but to the taxpayer as the institution will be claiming from the government.

On another note you might be able to buy an NUS student card off eBay....

I understand all you say. I am a carer.

But if you want to know what discounts etc there are for carers, ask 'What discounts etc are there for carers?'.

Instead, you came on asking how you could cheat the system for your own benefit. And I thought you said, in the OP, you were asking on behalf of someone else, who was the carer?

Why not start a new thread and ask the question upfront?

The only concessions I can find for cinemas and theatres are for senior citizens, children and full-time students.

Senior citizens concessions in the cinemas I go to are time restricted i.e. daytime only. However other groups including working adults if they are around in the day Monday to Friday, get much cheaper cinema prices anyway.

There are concessions for those on benefits including Attendance Allowance from some councils for their leisure centres and some other council events.

The best thing you can do is search for your council on the internet and see if they offer any concessions. You will generally find they are time restricted i.e. you can only use them in the day.

Also if your council doesn't offer the concession but does for those who are on other benefits, I suggest you write to all your council followed by the local councillors and your MP then to the local press to enquire why. (This can all be done on the internet and via email.)
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

there are now NUS cards for discounts that students need to pay for to be able to get. all students will get a student card which will show the NUS logo as they will automatically members but these will look different for each university. the new NUS extra card is what is usually required for special discounts and costs £10 (although i don't have one and cinemas in particular don't tend to ask to see them).

perhaps you could things like 'orange wednesdays' for cheap cinema tickets and check out the freebies board? i don't go to the cinema often anyway - even with a discount it costs a lot, so i do online dvd rentals instead.... i completely understand wthat your situation is unfair though!

Usually in a small 6th form college the NUS cards are laminates. When I went to Ecat we had to attend 4 weeks before we got our NUS card.

There are places that give carer discounts but you usually have to have the disabled person you are caring for with you.
It's a tough life being a carer but that's the way it goes. some places do discounts for thise in reciept of means tested benefits, if you get Income support as top up to your carers then you can use those concessions. But I doubt very much it's your local cinema or leisure centre. I have yet to see unemployed discounts at the cinema.
the reason i would EXPECT a discount is, what is the difference between ME and somebody who is unemployed??

The difference is you are NOT expected to go out and find a job. Even though you have to attend work focused interviews if on Income Support.
I have been a carer for the past 6 years and at least I don't have to worry about signing on, being available for work, filling in job seeker forms, attending job interviews etc.
You sound like you need a bit of respite care, contact your local adult social services and see if they can help with giving you some help.
