I'm planning on making loads of Christmas cakes this year and the ingredients end up costing so much!
Anybody know of or can recommend low price mixed fruit? last year I used Aldi, although the bags were tiny! lowest price per 100g per example is more up my street

Do you know anyone with a cash and carry membership card that you could borrow? You could buy a massive sack of fruit there. Sometimes they will let you in on a one-day guest pass if you ask them though. Also good for flour and large blocks of butter. Apart from that, I think B&M had slightly bigger bags than the Aldi ones last year; Holland & Barratt also did, but I have no idea of the prices on them.

Tesco Everyday Value Dried Mixed Fruit 500 grams is 95 pence. We have tried it and although the packet doesn't exactly make the mixed fruit look appealing, it does perform well in fruit cakes. I have a little poke through on a diner plate to make sure there are no hard bits or stalks, there are a few but no more so than the premium brands. We have found this mixed fruit to be really juicy. It doesn't have much mixed citrus peel but I just get a separate packet and add an extra couple of table spoons. Can't beat aldi eggs, flour and sugar either, we've been using them for the last six months with great baking results. If you don't mind using a vegetable fat based baking spread instead of butter, Sainsbury's Soft spread 2kg (not the basics stuff because it's too low in fat content for baking) is still at the moment 70 percent fat and is only £3.05 for the 2 kg. It's even better than stork for baking.0

That is excellent advice, thanks
I will compare the price per 100g to the cash and carry (tesco is 19p/100g) and make my decisionOur Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

remember that it may not be fair to do a basic "price per 100g" , and it may depend on what you are expecting to achieve. The cheapest one will almost certainly have a totally different percentage content of different types of fruit - so may be worth paying a bit extra for something that is more "mixed"
Having said that - I have no idea what the percentage mix was but today in Lidl they had 500g for £1.190 -

Very true, I tend to do basic mixed fruit and add glace cherries and mixed peel myself (to the preference of the recipient) but thanks for the heads upOur Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016
