Depends what you mean by 'cheap'! With the world and his wife getting a wood burning stove, we have found that it is actually very far from 'cheap' to be running a wood burner, simply because of the cost of wood.

Yes, but you get a warm glow of pleasure from knowing you're not transferring your wealth to mr Putin, Arab despots, decapitation enthusiasts, cultist maniacs, environmental disaster mongers and plenty of other tasty types involved in the oil business. Well, I do anyway.

Plenty of firewood here but I'm near portadown.

It can be a false economy buying "cheap" wood as it usually has a very high moisture content and will take an age to light and produce loads of smoke and deposits. If you can manage it get either kiln dried or fully air dried wood. You can get cheap moisture meters from amazon and the like, check moisture levels and try tnot to burn wood that is above 20% mositure

It has to have been covered and off the ground for a year, unless it's ash or pine which can be burnt a bit sooner. If wood is any way damp much less heat is produced.

Definitely needs to be kept dry for an extended period. We would chop and stack wood and not look at it again for in excess of 6 months (longer if stacking in winter).

Last we heard, we were talking about £1600 for a lorry load of logs. Needless to say, we get wood anywhere it is going begging (fallen trees etc.).

  • i stumbled upon this guy Chris. he gave us a sample to try and i was surprised by how good it was compared to the other wood i was using.

pretty sure it is ash imported from eastern europe he maybe mentioned. all i know is that its all i use now. another 2 bags being delivered this week to me.

he deserves a mention only due to me having used all kinds of other types of wood and suppliers before.

oh £90 for a bulk bag which i know is cheaper than another wood supplier, (not gonna name them though as that would be unfair)

Cheap and wood do not usually meet in a sentence

I now buy forestry and season for 2 years myself

Luckily I chose a multi fuel stove and use anthracite and ovals mostly in the very cold months.
