Hiya,
My 'puter, printer etc is in my living room. I want to move it back to where it was - my spare bedroom. (NTL cable box already there)
Before I disconnect everything I thought I'd better ask you:
Do I just unplug everything?
If I do, when connect up will everthing work as normal? Or will I need to re-install stuff?
I won't do anything 'till I hear from you wise one's

Do you not swich off at some time? If it worked there before it will just boot up as normal in it's repositioned site with no loss of anything.
ps I'm not a wise one!!!0 -

You're wiser than me!!
So, if I disconnect printer and scanner, and unplug everything, then reconnect ( it will take me a while to take all upstairs) all will work as normal??
And no, I never switch off at mains - should I???!!! Please advise:grouphug: A smile, a 'please' and a 'thank you' cost nothing0 -
Hi,
Once you have installed drivers/software etc for printers and scanners you can safely remove them and reattach them and you will not lose settings etc!
Everytime you turn of your pc (Not at the wall) it will stop talking to the peripheral devices anyway!.
You can safely unplug your pc and all the attached devices. I used to do this often, shifting my pc and everything with it to uni and back.
The only thing to note is be careful shifting the pc box (the bit with your hard drives in) try not to bump it too much as it can damage the disks.
hope this helps

^^ what Bertie said.
No probs at all. However I dislodged my CPU fan in a move once - cpu was hitting 80-90 degrees, ouch! Aslong as you move in gently you'll be fine
Generally most plugs will only fit in one place so there is little scope to go wrong, the only ones you might want to make a note of are keyboard/mouse ans speakers/mic but these are usually labelled clearly these days.Debt: a bloomin big mortgage

I also find that if you plug in usb devices into different ports Windows sometimes goes and hunts for the drivers again (despite them already being installed) and then you get an annoying prompt everytime you reboot or until you feed it the CD with the drivers so it can reinstall the drivers it already has............ *sigh*
So if you want to save yourself a little hassle (and cd swapping) then try to plug the same usb device into the same port. This only applies to 3rd party devices/drivers, which XP does not already come with its own plug and play version of.Faith is believing what you know ain't so...0 -
Thanks all.
I've done it!! Never again - too heavy - too many wires and far too much dust found!! It's staying where it is now 'till it dies - not yet please.
Thanks again:grouphug: A smile, a 'please' and a 'thank you' cost nothing0
