Can I ask a blindingly obvious question?

Your budgetting goes beyond the normal, it's obviously somehting you are interested in (or have a compulsive disorder towards;)), you are numerate and can do the numerate number crunching, use the spreadsheets, calculators, understand the most bizarre finance arrangements going, can find out information when you need it etc... have you ever considered it as a career? There are so many jobs out there with decent career structures crying out for numerate staff - credit controllers, bank workers, accountancy juniors, debt advisors etc you seem to be doing it near full time anyway.

The ironic thing is I am bloody awful at maths!!! I kid you not I struggle with basic equations!!! Plus I got a D at gcse so most banks etc wouldn't touch me with a barge pole.

Bad teachers, not interested then? The kind of calculations you are now doing, probably because interested and found your own way of thinking about things, are easily GCSE maths. I was unfortunately maths tutor and I've got kids with the personailty and ability of turnips (old, rotting turnips but with rich mummies and daddies) up to the GCSE C standard. Just because you got a D grade years ago doesn't mean that's your natural limit and it's something very easy to redo if motivated. People are very quick to say I can't do maths but nobody ever says I'm so bad at reading I struggle with spelling my own name, they misidentify not understand the method something was explained with as intrinsic lack of ability. If you can do interest/minimum payments, loan terms etc you aren't bad at maths and could get a grade C. So you didn't get how one maths teacher taught you several years ago, does that mean because you didn't get how to use credit cards and racked up some debt that you'll forever 'be bad at' money?
Maybe it isn't for you but don't pidgeon hole yourself in an artificial comfort zone, you may not want to do that kind of job, you may have no interest in redoing a maths GCSE but it's your choice not to do it not lack of ability.
On my maths is misunderstood mission, for anyone else in similar position if the lack of GCSE in maths is stopping you get certian jobs or considering them, there are a lot of college schemes and bursaries with childcare particularly if young and/or parents.

Thanks. I'll definately look into it.. don't want to let my compulsive organising and debt busting go to waste once it's all over lol.

  • Go for it sarah - my husband got an F at GCSE maths and has just done the OU's openings (a kind of access to higher education) course 'starting with maths' and he passed it with flying colours and now has 10 credits at university level 1. He is over the moon. It helped him get his current job as a bus driver - because he deals with money on the bus and had to sit a numeracy test which he knows he would have failed if he had not brushed up on his maths with that course.
