So Rail fares will rise by more than twice the rate of inflation if you consider that the governments preferred measure is the Consumer Price Index. We are all in it together *

It could have been worse. Rail fares could have gone up by 1%, and RPI could only have been 0.1%, then rail fares would have gone up TEN TIMES as much as inflation!!!
(to any fellow maths geeks reading this, yes I am being facetious)
I still don't get this Government's obsession with basing price rises around inflation figures; inflation is supposed to be caused by price rises :undecided #<CircularReference!>0 -
if only rail services and space improved at the same rate prices go up.
i bet they haven't gone up 3.5% in the last 10 years.
its about time the government acted on businesses running our public transport. they see to sit back and provide the bare minimum services whilst pocketing their profits and not reinvesting it.
having used public transport on other countries it seems we a light years behind.0 -
Does this mean the services will improve? I doubt it...Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

The problem is that due to years of mismangement, poor futureproofing by people who lived 50-100 years ago, and very expensive UK labour market (just remember that for every £1 net pay you receive, it costs an employer over £2 - but then everyone wants a (diminishing) pension, free healthcare, 5.6 weeks of annual leave, free buses for pensioners, etc) rail services are actually still very cheap.
I think fares should be doubled and then frozen for 20 years.
The government needs inflation to reduce the amount of money (in terms of purchasing power) it owes to the public.MSE wrote:Save money on train fares
To help you battle rising rail costs, here are some of our top tips (see our Cheap Trains guide for more):
Of course, none of these will help remotely with battling rising costs, because anyone with any sense will be doing them already, so the prices they pay will continue to go up.0 -

This is missleading and pretty poor journalism. The Government has not confirmed any price rises since the RPI rate was released yesterday.
Is MSE now resorting to using scare tactics like the papers?"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0
