Where is all the VENISON??

I read recently that 100,000 deer were culled annually in Scotland alone, never mind the rest of the country.

I love venison and prize it for being just about the only red meat which makes for healthy eating.

So why do I find that, on the rare occasions my local Tesco's stocks it, the packet says 'imported from New Zealand' and is at an eye-watering price?

Where is all the meat going to? There is something very strange going on here.

They have been culled but that does not mean they are fit for human consumption. Many are left where they fall.

I believe it is illegal to 'kill and leave'.

No, in my opinion the vast majority of this meat is finding a market somewhere but that does not include UK consumers, apparently.

lol we pay 45 pound for a full butchered bambi at our local butcher. he kills the poor little thing himself...

tasty ....had venison meat balls couple of nights ago...and the cutlets(?) are too die for lol

think the butchered meat comes out at approx. 9kg-10kg (roe deer)
  • Yes, venison steaks are fantastic and very low saturates.

I can't help feeling that some vested interest somewhere wants this to be kept as a rich man's meat and not break into the mass market.

A lot will go directly to restaurants and a lot more will be sold at Farmer's Markets.

bit about it being sold here http://www.scotsman.com/news/environment/forestry-commission-scotland-s-5m-from-deer-culls-1-3266618
but no indication who it's being sold to or for what purpose
Of course the killing is a seasonal activity for most breeds - see table at bottom of the page here http://basc.org.uk/cop/deer-stalking/
which could make a difference to availability

The three local venison farms sell all of their product from their own farm shops .... its proven too darn difficult to get it into the main supermarkets and they would get paid a pittance from them anyway.

Its not too pricey - about the same as organic mince I suppose - but does taste a lot nicer.

TBH, if offered an option of venison from Tesco & a farmers market or local butchers, I'd take the latter anytime - better price & probably locally sourced.
