How much would you pay for a tooth?

I've posted before about this problem tooth of mine. Basically, it has had a root canal done, then a second root canal retreatment and now has an abscess again. I'm seeing the endodontist again on Wed. I'm already in debt from the second retreatment.

My question is really how much would most people pay to keep a tooth in the same situation? I'm thinking the next step would be an apicectomy or yet another retreatment of the root canal. I've been reading that success rates drop each time it needs re-done so I'm wondering if it's worth getting into more debt over this.

Also, has anyone had a top molar tooth extracted? Is it as bad as when I had my wisdom teeth extracted? Are you able to eat ok without it?

Get it out, its just a tug and its gone.

Gums harden so no problem eating..... I had 4 molars extracted, you couldn't see the gap and I ddnt have them replaced and eating wasn't a problem.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Does the extraction site take long to heal? I've to have an endoscopy done next week in hospital and I'm worried they'll call it off if I have a big gaping wound in my mouth! Also, I'm going on holiday the week after that, including a theme park with big fast rollercoasters. I'd be worried it'll cause bleeding.

It really depends on how successful each treatment is predicted to be.

I know from your previous posts about this tooth that it has given problems way before it was expected to (Which can always happen - and is a real bu££er if it happens to you)

Have you seen the endodontist yet?

All the questions you ask are really personal questions to you.

The tooth might come out perfectly OK in you, it might not - other people's experiences won't really help!

Some people manage fine without a particular tooth, for others it can cause problems - again, what other people find won't really be helpful.

As for price to pay - on average an implant can cost a couple of thousand pounds. If the cost of fixing a particular tooth comes to more than this, or even close to this, then having it out and replacing with an implant should certainly be discussed with the dentist to see if it is an option.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I'm seeing the endodontist in two days time. I've just spoke to them on the phone and they told me if it needs extracted, I'll have to go elsewhere as they don't do extractions. I don't know if I can wait for weeks getting an appointment at my own dentist. The hospital have told me they will cancel my endoscopy if there is any bleeding in my mouth so I'm really stuck!

Toothsmith, do these first molars heal quicker if they are stitched after? Should I try to find an oral surgeon or something?
  • Do implants have to go in at the same time that the tooth comes out, or can you wait and make a decision later?

Ripply, is your endoscopy urgent, which end is it going in?

Top end this time! I guess they're worried about poking around in my mouth with the endoscope. They're very keen to do it urgently as I had a bad bleed in my stomach recently. It's being done this time under general anaesthetic.

I've waited ages for it and would be so disappointed if it's cancelled but the pain I'm in with this tooth isn't even going away despite being on antibiotics and painkillers.

If you generally stop bleeding in a normal sort of time if you cut yourself - then having the tooth out shouldn't cause problems with the endoscopy.

To all intents and purposes, a tooth socket is usually pretty stable within a few hours.

If blood causes them a problem - then the high proportion of the population with gums that bleed easily would cause them real trouble!!

You can wait - but bone does start disappearing as soon as the tooth is out, and an implant is much easier to provide if there is plenty of bone to put it into. So best to decide within a year - 18 months.

Thanks Toothsmith. Hopefully the endoscopy will be able to go ahead. I'll have to find someone to extract this thing with short notice. I'm so frightened about getting dry socket and all that but the pain was so bad last night, I kept thinking about getting the pliers! Felt like Tom Hanks in 'Castaway'.

Is any regular dentist able to do this?
