Backwards at going forwards!

Hello all,

I have been lurking and reading the diaries for a little while now and wanted to start a diary but wasn't sure whether to or not...as the title of this diary hints Im doing things a bit backwards...

We are moving house at the end of August (fingers and everything else crossed) into a very lovely new house, our mortgage will be pretty much doubling but its worth it as the house is perfect for us! Anyway I digress...currently my DH and I have one CC which is interest free, we owe £1200 on this. The backwards part of my diary is it looks like we will need to borrow more money once we move in order to make the garden safe and help save on heating, this includes partially fencing in the garden to make it secure for my two doggies (both rescued and my babies!) this is estimated to cost 2k as its a very large area. This is compulsory as its near a large road and their safety and security is my priority! The other project is getting a flue and multi fuel fire installed, the house is not attached to any mains, therefore its Gas canisters which are not cheap, therefore a decent fire will help reduce overall fuel costs in the long run, this is estimated to be 3-4k.

This is pure estimates, but it makes me nervous about having to borrow with our new mortgage, on paper it does all work and we can afford the loan repayments. How much we need to borrow will rely on how much money we have left once we move and have payed the fees etc, and how cheap we can get the fence, fire and chimney installed!

So thats why this is called backwards at going forwards as I am looking at getting into more debt before becoming debt free!

Anyways...wanted to start this diary now before we move as a way of staying focused on our journey and making sure I keep on track! My DH and I paid for our wedding last year and honeymoon without having to borrow so I know we be strict when we need to be!

I'ts reassuring to know that there are others who in spite of wanting to be mortgage free are in the process of spending money! It's not always about spending the bare minimum is it? Its about being fully aware of your financial position and making reasoned, sensible choices.

    Good luck with your move.

The new house sounds great and I understand the need for those quite big expenditures, but have you looked at how you might manage if illness or redundancy struck in the near future?

I put this forward, not to be a wet blanket, but because a family member who had been strong, healthy and a very hard worker suddenly suffered a major problem. 6 weeks in a coma, 6 months on SSP, 3 children at home. Thankfully a teensy mortgage, and no debt, but would have been is awful difficulties if large family had not been able to help with car costs, food etc. 100+ miles round trip hospital and £6/7 per day parking charges for a start:(

I know that statistically this is a low risk, but how many people on MSE have thought their jobs to be secure and spent months/years seeking a new position.

Just a thought, wishing you well, from someone else whose rescue dogs means the whole world to me:D

Thanks Pushkin, its hard to weigh up spending sometimes but its got to be done! Can only work towards mortgage free when the house is sorted really!

Hi Maddiemay, its something I often wonder/worry about, we have both been fortunate to have new jobs and promotions within the last few years, this has made it easy to save and pay fully for things, so we are aware of how different it will be to pay more. I have 1.5k saved of personal money and we should have 1.2k left after moving etc, Im tempted to keep this for emergencies and try to overpay the loan every month, any amount will do! Unfortunately Im not sure what we could do if one of us became very unwell, we do have life cover on our mortgage which includes long term sickness so would have to hope whatever we were struck with would be covered! We are both fortunate enough to have the oppertunities for overtime at our current jobs and I will be doing two extras a week till the end of September which depending on the rate would be very useful!

More than anything I don't want to borrow more than we already have (the £1200, this was from we first bought our house three years ago and furnished it! Hadn't thought about paying it off any quicker as its 0% but now wish we had!) But I just can't see how we could get the fences done safely and quickly without borrowing, the fire could wait but ultimately it would save us a lot on our heating! Ah well will keep playing with the figures!

So theoretically we could be moving a week Friday, but I'm having horribly negative thoughts that its not going to go smoothy, nothing about this whole buying/selling process has! Can't reach solicitors either..bah!

Had a naughty spend day, have ended up buying mid week wine, naughty but nice! And a packet of Jammie Dodgers...Oops. Need to make sure I claim for my fuel at work that will cover that little expenditure at least!

Thought I would bore anyone who reads with a little about my babies, they have four legs and paws! I have two rescue dogs that I love, we are all cuddled up on the couch at the mo as Hubby is out working late. They mean the world to me, my big girl has lots of issues, shes a big reactive stresshead who gets upset easily so the new neighbours little dogs are driving her mad! She can't wait to move to our new house with only one neighbour! My little dude was recently diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidous, he has been an expensive little dog but well worth all the money, since he was a Pup he has got ill and hurt himself!

Anyway all tired out, have done onepoll.com and up to almost £15 now!

Good evening anyone who pops in!
