In what area of your life have you managed the biggest money savings?

I am just curious.
For me, I have made the biggest savings in the area of gas and electricity usage.
I have halved my monthly spends on them :)

My next aim is to spend less on food.

Comments

  • For me it's food spending - mine has drastically reduced. I used to be prone to just picking stuff up whenever I was out without checking what I actually needed. I was also a wee bit lazy in terms of using my freezer. Now I use up what I have before getting more and I take a list with me to keep me on the straight and narrow. I also freeze just about everything that can't run away from me :rotfl:

I'm so good at it now that for at least 2 weeks per month all I need to buy is a few fresh items for lunches at work - which reminds me that I used to buy lunch at work (which cost a fortune ) and I now take it with me.

For me it was paying off the mortgage early. I lived in era where 13% interest rate on a mortgage was normal, and even went up to 15% once

Whenever the rate dropped, I continued paying at the old rate

We bought a crappy house then did it up so our mortgage payment has always been a lot lower than it could have even. Lucky really as we have both ended up not working ATM so would have found ourselfs in a big mess
Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T
  • According to surveys, the biggest expense category is Housing (bills, rent, house insurance, mortgage...), that's where more than 30% of expenses go! So save there :)
  • Paying off the mortgage when a redundancy happened, installing our woodstove too has meant we no longer run the central heating only heat water for an hour twice a day and having a water meter installed has meant big savings too. Best of all was the decision to live within our means when we first got married that's saved us more than anything else we've ever done.

Having a husband that can do almost all the jobs needed round the house. He must have saved us thousands over the years.

He recently refurbished our kitchen (knocked 2 rooms into one large kitchen).

He has also refurbished our bathroom.

I only have to mention something that needs doing and he has it sorted.
