yes that's why i done it. we had a doggy smell all the time. since i done it, no smell at all. they say you should do it every time you change the bag. but i did not know. it really is easy. filter just lifts out. take note of which way up the plastic thing is inside it. pull that out. then clean in sink with warm water. i used liquid wash solution for clothes then added comfort for a bit of a nice smell.
