dhss debt

i have just today recieved notification from dhss that i owe £13.000 from 14 years ago, i believed the debt was settled as i have not heard anything from them for 10years 2 months , what is my standing on this matter, they are demanding settlement by 30th august, and as i say i thought this matter was dealt with when i was with my ex-wife, please any advice or correct information my new wife is beside herself

    Why did you think it had been dealt with - did you make payments?

    DHSS can chase a debt for up to 20 years, even then, they can still take it from any benefits you may be getting, even a state pension, so there is no getting away from it.
    Ask for a full breakdown of the debt, why do you believe it was dealt with ?
    I suspect you will have to come to some kind of payment arrangement with them, ignore there deadline, its there's not yours, ask for proof, then take it from there.
