John Lewis haggling

Hi all,
From searching on the forum this seems to be quite difficult despite it being in the top 10 of best places to haggle.
Have many people had any success? I'm off there tomorrow with a view to spending about £1,100 for our new arrival in October. I'm looking at getting several items from them such as:
Pram
Car seat
Accessories for pram
Moses basket and stand
As above, all of those come to around the £1,100 mark. I'm going with info so that they price match and it comes down to about the £1,030 mark.
Am I correct in assuming JL staff get 12 - 25% discount? Is this a set amount? e.g. they get at most £1,000 off a year or something? Do Waitrose staff get this discount?
My plan is to request 10% discount on the basis that I could get my friend to buy everything for me and get 12%, which is the truth, it's just i'd rather not have the hassle with asking her etc.
Any thoughts on if its likely to work?
Thanks,
James

Is your friend allowed to get discount for friends?
Aside from the price match that you are aware of, I can't say I've ever seen anyone haggle in John Lewis!0 -
If you're looking to save money...have you thought about buying 2nd hand items from Eb*y? When I was expecting my son, I got my Moses basket and stand 2nd hand from Eb*y. Babies are only in these for such a short time (less than 3 months for my son) it seems a waste of money to pay JL prices for items that you're going to use for such a short time..IMO. Good luck to you and your new arrival xxSPC7 ~ Member#390 ~ £432.45 declared :j

Not sure if they are allowed to be fair.
Yeah, i've thought about second hand but we're hoping to have a few kids so would like the luxury in the first instance and get value by using it for hopefully another 3 kids in the future.
I'm a bit wary of some items being second hand such as car seats as if they haven't been cared for they may not be effective.0 -
JL partners are not allowed to share their discount with friends.0

Look on Netmums nearly new postings and Gumtree.
All items are local to you and you can haggle too.
If you don't like the item you don't have to buy it.
There are some fantastic nearly new items to be had.
I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand car seat or cot mattress but pretty much everything else.

good luck with your new arrival

They will price match if you can find another retailer on the high street within an 8 mile radius of the store who is selling the pram you want at a cheaper price. It needs to be the same colours, accessories, etc that come with the pram. If anything is different at the other retailer to the pram they are selling they won't sell it at price match. It's called Never Knowingly undersold and the terms and conditions are on their website.
They will not just give you a ten percent discount. They would give you a discount possibly if stock was marked/box damaged or similar but not for perfect stock.
Your friend who works for them will get into a lot of trouble if they buy a pram for you with your money and probably be sacked. Do not put your friend in the position of potentially losing their job for you to save money. It is their perk not yours.0 -
Have a look around and try to price check everything your looking for, otherwise try Ebay and Amazon. I don't know if John Lewis do haggling, you could always try and I'd advise speaking to a manager rather than a general member of staff as they are unlikely to have the authority to allow price changes without it putting their job in jeopardy which then would possibly put the back up of the manager when they do invariably find out as it's not very fair. Explain your problem and maybe they can help by suggesting other products and bare in mind anything paid with by a credit card if it is over £100 should be covered for faults and issues by the card itself.0

PS don't forget to use cash back credit cards as that will help a little.

Thanks all. Popped in today and got them to price match a load of places. They weren't within 8 miles as mentioned above and they even matched a bundle deal for me which they don't normally do.
Wouldn't ask my friend to get extra discount knowing that they would face disciplinary action if caught.
Overall very happy with JL.
Thanks for the input all.0
