Never say never :-) Your BMI isn't that high - and I don't really subscribe to BMI being a good measure at all - BUT I would be suprised if you were truly neutral. You might need a little bit of support if you are carrying a bit of extra weight and, paradoxically a firmer shoe - rather than a top of the range squidgy neutral.
Glad you are feeling a bit better - great achievement everyone!!0 -
Well done Nikki and Pink Petal. Both done great!!
Thanks also for the encouragement. Will never do it in 55 mins, not will I try a half lol, but my knees are much better this morning so I can actually imagine running again. I can almost imagine trying a 10k again!! I am also thinking perhaps I didn't build up gradually enough. I also never mentioned I'm BMI 27 or 28 and 40 years old, so perhaps both of those facts contributed too!
Well done both on your achievements this week!!!
I agree with gleek, never say never! When I did my first 10k I was 3.5stone overweight...and I'm 36!
Not saying you ever have to do a half, or aim to run a 10k in a particular time...everyone is different. But keep at it and your time will come down. I found it a good motivator, my first time was 1:18 and I was determined to beat that, despite vowing never to run again for a week afterwards. It's quite addictive! Seven months after my first race I did the woman's 10k and managed 1:07 and then gradually chipped away at those minutes til I finally got under an hour.
Time isn't everything though, it's just what I use to keep myself interested! haha!

hmmm interestingly yes I've got asics cumulus 16s. They sound squidgy, and they weren't cheap....so maybe you have a point.
Someone from Parkrun said she thinks my problem was my training, that I should have taken my distance up in 1/2 km increments over several weeks. I think it could be a mixture of a few things then. I'll try that Glasgow store at some point for another analysis. Another opinion won't hurt!0 -

Well done you!! That's an amazing improvement which I have no chance of being able to do so I take my hat of to you!
I know you are all right, I shouldn't give up. I still did it, and if someone suggested I'd be running a 10k two years ago I'd have laughed at them!! So, miracles do happen. :rotfl:
Knees are improving all the time. I'm going to badminton tonight but won't overdo it!0 -

I agree with your friend. I do think you need to up the training in increments. I don't want to keep on at it, but look at the couch to 10k programme - not done it but heard good things about c25k, or runners world website.
What I would say about the shoes is that sometimes they change the models so get your shoes fitted professionally for EVERY new pair of shoes - especially if you are injury prone/a bit heavier/with problem feet! I used to run in the nimbus and used it for 3 models till the shop said that the 14s would be too squidgy for me and that i needed to go a bit firmer as though you need cushioning, you need something to support you as well. I now run in brooks pure flows - brilliant shoes - love love love them - though you do have to change your form a bit so drop down your mileage for a wee while - worth it though!!
I used to get on well with Saucony rides - though a few years ago they dropped the heel to be a bit more " natural running-like" but they didn't drop it enough for me so it was some weird half way house.
Stick with the running, get a second opinion on the shoes, do some VMO knee exercises and also some glute work - doing the bridge exercise is good - as weak glutes are often a huge problem, seek out a mild training plan that goes up in mileage slowly, but that does take you so that your midweek runs are 3 miles and you are going for 4, 5, 6 - even 7 or 8 by the end of the plan.
At this stage, going longer will mean that when you go back to your short distances it will feel easy so you will go faster. You have just started, you have EVERY chance of breaking the hour and 55 mins. I have only run 1 10K race and was just over the hour in my first year of running. I can only break 56 in training when I am on the last weeks of a half marathon programme. I could not run it that fast at the moment, I would be probably on the hour - but it is amazing what adding distance can do for the speed when you are just starting out!!
You are doing great! Stick with it!!!0
