Information box that won't go away!

Evening folks.

I'm at my wits end with this problem!

I have an issue with my newish Sony monitor that i've put up with for about 8 months.I know I should take it back, but its the only thing I don't like doing (knowing they'll fob me off, and I can't live without the old tinter:D )

I have a box in the middle of the screen stating:

i INFORMATION

DDC-CI : OFF

I'm fairly sure that message has changed on and off, and for weeks on end it dissapears, but not recently. Months ago at its worst, it brought up a larger box and constantly flickered with different random messages - that at least has ceased!

I am moving shortly, and have packed away the lit, but the label on the monitor reads SDM-E96D.

It's a mare constantly dragging the window to read/view whatever I'm doing.

Posting in case there is a simple solution! Or I'm going to have to go to PC world and put up with thier service:rolleyes:

Cheers

"DDC/CI makes it possible to adjust and setup detailed functions on PC, instead of the monitor OSD.

Monitor can be adjusted with PC by connecting communication between PC and monitor when DDC/CI is ON, and monitor cannot be adjusted with PC because communication between PC and monitor is disconnected when DDC/CI is OFF"

Does the computer have monitor control software on it and is it working?

I don't know, is thier any way to check this?

Just to say this PC is a media ready or something, in case that makes a difference (I don't take advantage of this function)

    Thank you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_Data_Channel explains a bit more. Have a play around with your graphics card software. Some have fancy graphical interfaces to configure different things - try right-clicking your desktop. There may be something about disabling DDC-CI in the help.

Do you mean right click on desktop as in when there is no windows open? I can't see a help option!.

Sorry to bang on, but how do I know if I have a graphics card?

LOL, thanks for all the help. I'm thinking I should add that the box is semi transparent, which is leading me to think its just a monitor prob, rather than the PC.

    Chippy, thanks for the link

Yes, right-click on an empty part of the Desktop. On my computer this gives an option to select ATI Catalyst Control Centre for changing my graphics card properties. Or there might be a similar program which you access via Start - All Programs.

The help (if any) I am referring to is the help in the graphics card configuration program.

In which case try the on screen display (OSD), accessed via buttons on the monitor itself - see http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=493. There might be an incompatibility between the monitor settings set via the OSD and what the graphics card is telling it.

    Thanks Chippy.

I got the ATI bit up, but I'm still baffled! also tried the on monitor buttons ( if I press a certain one for long enough - it disappears for a time (sometimes)

Thanks for the help, thats really good of you. I'll read around all the links tomorrow with a clearer head, and try to work it out.

    Thanks again!

After all the links and further research, my little box was still laughing at me!

After giving up on that I had a good scrap with the buttons, and eventually found that keeping the 3rd button depressed it went away.

I now have a Lambert and Butler pack wedged in the gap!

    Technophobe? yes. Resourceful? yes. LOL!
