makeup artist career

I'm hoping that someone can help with my query. My daughter is a newly qualified makeup artist and cannot get work in this field despite being really good at what she does and has a great portfolio. Her tutors told the students they need to work on makeup counters first! To me this is "sales" and not what she's trained for and in any case she can't even get this because Estee Lauder own most brands and if you have an interview and not offered the job, you cannot reapply for any of their brands until 6 months have elapsed! This seems really unfair. She also has a history degree so is not a dummy by any means. Any MSE's with inside knowledge would be much appreciated. She is loosing all hope and I'm worried about her

  • Could she go self employed (wedding, prom, party makeup)?

I have no knowledge whatsoever of the industry, but it seems to me that while there obviously is a sales element to working on a makeup counter there's also a large component that is advising customers what will work for them and applying the makeup to demonstrate this. I'd say 6 months of doing that would show that she has the practical aptitude and other areas of the industry would have a real world reference to go by rather than results from academia.

My big sisters bestest mate is a successful TV / theatre / film make up artist and we often see her working name on the credits of some very enjoyable programs.

She started out by learning her trade in amateur dramatics, working mostly for free and slowly climbing the ladder.

Nowadays she can command £1000+ per day and can reel off a whole host of 'A' list actors / actresses and directors who insist she is hired and present on set.

Apparently, make up for the camera is a totally different discipline to make up for the eye !

Don't think that her mum helped her very much in her career, in fact, in these sort of circles, I reckon they are looking for personal qualities rather than a 3rd parties !

Oh get a grip! There are hundreds of professions where people can command a higher day rate. Its called demand and supply! How about applauding someone who has worked hard and is doing well for their self?

At least these people are working and paying taxes to help provide for people that use these foodbanks!

From your post I would expect you to give all your non essential income to charity and help the poor. Do you?

She's a very nice person actually, mentally well balanced and very down to earth. Keeps her feet firmly on the ground whilst rubbing 'rouge' into Colin Firths cheeks.

You'd like her, I'm sure you would. Despite your bitter and twisted opinion on anyone who earns what you could only dream of, and it is bitter and twisted and it is a dream of yours isn't it?

No one ever said she earns £1000 every day.

What value do you place on your time?

Is your time worth £millions or is it worth nothing?

Funnily enuff', my big sis's bestest ever mate still does make up for the am drams !

The individuals who enjoy positive outcomes can answer that, I wouldn't even try.

OP, I have a chum who is a makeup artist in the USA - he started off by working in local theatres for am-dram type groups to get experience. He now has his own salon and brand of makeup.

I would suggest am-dram groups. She could try working on a cruise ship.
