How much do you save?

On average, when buying a week's groceries how much do you save by switching from Tesco/Sainsburys to Aldi?

Comments

  • Slightly different, as I switched from Morrisons to Lidl, but I was spending at least £50 a week (sometimes closer to £60) on just 2 adults (and a toddler who was with us every weekend).

Now we do 90% of our weekly shop at Lidl, and it's very rare we go over £30 for a weekly shop for 2 adults and an 11 month old (plus the now 4 year old who's with us every other weekend).

It varies, I find the biggest price differences when I shop at the open air market stalls, and the food tastes better! It has to be practiced a few times to get it right though- you have to have an eye for detail and to see the odd bad item which is often missed. It does pay off though and even if I shop first thing in the day when the fresh food isn't reduced to "a paaaand a bowl" I still save around 50% compared to store prices, and the queues are far shorter!

I do a big shop at aldi once a month. I switched from tesco a couple of years ago though theres still a few things i get from tesco. On the items I buy from aldi i save approximately a third. When i have been bored I've ran my aldi receipt
through the tesco online groceries and it always works out about the same.

I calculate I save about 35 to 40%. I do a full weekly shop in Aldi and haven't been to Trescos for a 'top up shop' for months now. rather than use the petrol to get to Tresco, I find its cheaper for me to get the items I want (OXO cubes, compost bags and a few other things) up at our local corner shop. I have to pick up fresh bread and milk every few days anyway.

I used to shop online and use mysupermarket.com for the best deal.

Currently I am alternating between Lidl and Aldi to get a good all round shop and have done for a year and a half with amazing savings.

But I am wondering whether to alternate between B&M (all groceries and other stuff) and market (fresh fruit and veg and other stuff) to get the best deal.

If you have a better solution please tell as I am always trying to reduce my spend.

It seems shopping habits are changing. Just because something has always been sold in a certain shop doesn't mean they always has to. In France and Germany for example they have different places to ours where they sell things. Due to refrigeration items don't have to be sold in the traditional way.

The big four are jostling for top spot and can't understand why they are loosing market share on the news but they are really going have to stop ripping us off to survive.
  • I'd say we save anywhere in the region of £40-£60 per week by swapping from Sainsburys (with then staff discount) to a combo of mainly Aldi with about 20% Lidl and about 3% Sainsburys. We've been able to utilise the savings and had a holiday for the first time in three years this year and we were also able to replace our car. It's good to actually see something for our hard earned cash at last. Wish we'd swapped sooner :( x

I use http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ I go shopping at tesco then switch stores to see which one will give me the best saving (make sure you watch to see what the replacements are!).
on average I save around £20 on a £60 shop when I go to Aldi but our Aldi is a lot further away than some of the big 4 so I have to weigh up whether it's worth the longer special round trip to Aldi as opposed to drivign by one of the big 4 on my way home/out.

My savings are about 33% having switched from Sainsburys to a combination of Aldi or Lidl with some spend at fruit and veg stall at market if we are there , local butchers , B&M , home bargains and if there's anything we can't get from them Asda or Sainsburys.
