mobile contract & stuff

In 2011 I got a mobile phone contract and broadband dongle with Three on contact, 18 months for both. I was paying £49.99 a month until I lost my mobile phone, I phoned 3 and they cancelled my sim card.

I cancelled all direct debits (was living in supported accomadation at the time), moved back in with my mum in 2012.

Last month I recieved a bill of £1799.64 from 3 for the two contracts I had with them in 2011.

It seems as though they never terminated the contract and kept charging me a £50 monthly fee for 3 years even though I cancelled all direct debits.

Are they allowed to do that? Keep on charging me after cancelling all direct debits?

    You signed up to an 18 month contract for phone and broadband, just because you lost your phone, does not release you from this contract.
    You are still liable for the full 18 month contract, and possibly longer as you failed to cancel it after the minimum term was up, big mistake !!!
    I suggest you make some kind of payment arrangement with them, as otherwise, your credit will be ruined, and you could get a CCJ.

    Was the bill from 3 or a debt collector.

    You may be able to negotiate to get this reduced. Do everything in writing.

    I took out a 2 year contract with Three and you cannot cancel them without paying for every month that you should have been in the contract.

    If you cancelled the direct debit then that doesn't end the contract sadly, you will still owe them for the rest of the months that you did not pay, even if you lost the phone.

    Unfortunately there is no early way out of these contracts! I discovered this myself when I tried to cancel mine after 1 year. I've learned my lesson now and will never take out a long contract again!
