My sister has a bag full of stuff she was going to take to her local charity shop and has just had a sticker for a bag collection for the above charity put through her door and wondered if it helped any local charities in NI ?

I've never been comfortable with the sticker charities and prefer to take our stuff directly to the shop. Some have parking which makes it easier to drop off

I don't trust them at all. I always have it in my head that they'll just take the stuff to one of those places that give you cash by the weight of the clothes.

I'd much prefer my items to go to a shop for someone else to enjoy.
  • Take it to one of the shops, these folks are usually Middle men who take a cut of the cash value of the cloths....

It all strikes me as a little dodgy - it does seem to be a 'middleman' operation. I've no doubt that the ABC charity itself is genuine, I just wouldn't be 100% sure about HWF Recycling - particularly since they don't have their own corporate website, just this one.

Not having transport, I find it more convenient to take the risk and use these collections occasionally, but not unless they provide a bag as well as a sticker. Why should I provide a bag?

    Doesn't support any local charities

Reading the reports on the charities commission it's been set up to fund research into breast cancer.

...just to clarify that, the ABC Charity has been set up to fund the research.

The Recycling company claims to support the charity, but I can't see anywhere where it says how much of the money it earns that it sends on to ABC.

Note also that ABC is the registered charity, *not* the recycling company.

Seems until they went into the 'rag trade' they were actually in the red the past four years.

I wouldn't give tuppence to them

There are well known and respected breast cancer charities out there to donate to
  • "Supporting a charity" is a very wide term - it could mean that they give 10% - or even 1% - of their profit (after expenses, salaries and tax...) to the charity!

I give everything direct to charity shops - even if it's only a supermarket bag full at a time, where they are in town centres and parking is difficult.

Exactly, I remember seeing a well known brand of Nappies with all their advertising about supporting a well known international charity by giving 1 vaccine for every packet bought... turns out 1 vaccine cost 5p..... 5 p out off a sale of £5+..... 1%....
