IMHO Tescos along with the other supermarkets, NEVER offer VFM wines, even when they have special
They must be doing something right, as one in four bottles of Wine, bought in the UK comes from Tesco. In fact they are now the largest retailer of Wine in the UK. Often it's a case of you get what you pay for.0 -

They do indeed sell a lot of wine (we used to buy most of ours there) but that's no great surprise given the hold they have (now loosening) on the UK grocery market.
I became increasingly annoyed at the sneaky and downright deceitful pricing tactics they use to shift all their food and wine. That led me to try other, less deceitful, outlets - and I discovered that Aldi wines are every bit as god as Tesco wines (often better) but at substantially lower prices.
Good wines at much lower prices - and without all the price reduction faking. Check out the reviews of Aldi wines - you might be surprised.0 -

Quite shocking statistics I must say, and it speaks volumes for the wine knowledge (lack of IMO), and palate of the average person in the UK.
I find most wines (red and white) from supermarkets are very sweet, one dimensional, with no varietal charcteristics. I think that the sweetness thing, is something which has happened as a result of the US influence on the UK palate. The same influence extends to very fatty foods found in the MaccyD's, Burgerkings and Colonel Sanders.0 -
I'd agree with you that you get what you pay for - which is precisely why I gave up buying wine from Tesco.

What a coincidence, I have a bottle of Aldi's Costieres de Nimes for tonight:)
I find bith Aldi and Lidl wines far more honest, both in their content and pricing, than the big supermarket offerings.0 -
Ok, I may wander up to my nearest Aldi/Lidl for a change from Tesco, care to recommend a decent white wine for under a fiver ?
Thanks0 -

Here's a link you might find useful, though. I have tried (and can recommend) both of the Pinot Grigios:
