Not sure what to do - Help!!

Options
I'm currently on Job Seekers allowance and have been put onto New Deal due to being out of full time work for 6 months.

I had an interview today at a post office which is a 30 min bus ride from where I live. The woman who owned the shop where the post office is situated seemed to like me. However I was put off the job just by talking to her. She was very - to put it bluntly - up her own a$$.

She told me that if she were to hire me, and she sent for my references and they came back anything but positive, I would be fired. She also stated that it was my job to keep my till position balanced - any missing money would be taken from my wages. Which is fair enough.

Pay is minimum wage. I'm 19 so that works out at £4.45 an hour.

However on Thursday I have a place booked for a Tesco open day. There is a new store opening 10 mins bus ride away from me later in the year and they are specifically recruiting those that have been out of work for 6 months and are recieving benefits. Once all places have been filled by these people, the recruitment will then be let out to anyone.

The tesco job, assuming it will be minimum wage also, appeals to me more seeing as they are focusing on those who have been out of work for 6months+. Also it is closer to where I live.

What do I do? The woman from the post office has said she will ring after 5pm tonight to let me know about the job vacancy (whether i got it or not).

Should I turn down the post office and go for the tesco job? What do you think?

I'd go for the Tesco job at your age. You'll meet new people, the pay will (hopefully) be better and you'll have more chance of climbing the ladder (even if it's to re-stock the higher shelves!)

I'm pretty sure that legally employers are not allowed to do this.

I would go for the Tesco job too - I just get a better feeling about it. It's closer, it's a tailor made scheme, you will probably have more oppurtunities for promotion. You don't really mention whta the post office position has to recommend it - in fact you sound quite negative about it. That sets the alarms going to me - you have to feel good about a job at the beginning or you'll never really enjoy it.

  • What if you knocl back PO job, providing you've even got it, and get nowhere with Tesco? YOu 'd be better off taking the first job you get offered, its always easier to find more suitable work whilst in employment. Also, a 30 minute bus ride, welcome to the world of commuting, 30 minutes is nothing really compared to commute's most have to make!!
As for the woman up her own rear, she could just be super confident, or had to have sat and interviewed 2 days worth of time wasters, I know first impressions count, but give her a chance, she could be soft as clarts!
Good luck whatever you decide, 'cos any jobs better than no job!!

What do I do if the post office woman calls and offers me a job? Do I just say I've had a better offer? lol as you can see I'm not really clued up on all this.

Personally I'd rather take a job at the new Tesco store - all employees there would be starting at the same time, at the same level, so there'd be people understanding the process I'm going through 'cause they are too at the same time.

I just sort of hope this post office woman has found someone she likes better. The fact she kept chiming on about my exam results sort of puts me in a position where I think she may offer me the job. However I am sort of hoping she calls to give me bad news - as awful as that seems.

To be honest, as soon as I left the interview I told my mum I didn't feel like I wanted to take a job there if offered one. I'm not being ungrateful but I sort of hope she'll call me with 'bad news'.

She made the job seem so unappealing - talking about taking any losses from employees wages, firing if references don't come back positive, taking up to 3 months to learn properly how the computers at the post office work etc. She wasn't exactly bigging up the job :undecided

Haha thanks - I'm sort of dreading 5pm coming round. She said she was interviewing all day, and I was the second person she saw - hopefully she'll have forgot about how good I am  haha :rotfl:

I just don't feel that job is right for me, but I'm still confused as to what to do argh.

I don't know what to do if she calls with 'good news' - what do i say??

  • The woman called and offered me one of the 'jobs' if i wanted it. I told her I'd had another offer and wouldn't be interested.

I worked out why in the interview she said the hours wouldn't be set from week to week - obviously the person that has gone on maternity leave, her hours have been divided up, opening up a few jobs as a job share for applicants.

It was also only untill next june when the woman is due to return, with no guarentee of a perminant job opening up.

    Here I come tesco!!

Good luck for Tesco! For future reference, when you're offered a job, it's OK in almost any situation to say "Do you mind if I think about it? I have to think through the implications of [pick any item from travelling / hours / salary / anything else that may apply to you] and I wouldn't want to say yes to you now and then realise that I can't accept after all." I've always slept on a job offer, although I have to say I've gone with my gut reaction!

The fact she said any unbalanced money would be taken from wages seemed a little dodgy :undecided And that she'd get references AFTER employing, and if she wasn't pleased she would fire the employee. Are companies allowed to do that?? I dunno.

But gut reaction told me not to take the job, and to go grab a place at tesco. I know tesco probably isn't under the 'fabulous' umberella of occupations - but atleast it'll bring in money for me. I've had experience at Iceland so hopefully, fingers crossed, I shall be offered a place :o
