a liabilty order was made against me for council tax arrears I've since paid the council but it had been passed to jacobs baliffs they put the debt up by £50 more do i have to pay them that money the council mentioned a new legislation where the money i've paid is split between them and jacobs??? i read somewhere baliffs can't charge for sending letters in regard to council tax?

have just spoken to jacobs they said its a fee when it gets passed to them £75 i need to pay to avoid further action.0

Hello there,
The £75 fee is the first fee that can be charged once a file has been passed over to a bailiff (these are now called 'Enforcement Agents'). It's important to try and arrive at a reasonable repayment arrangement as further costs could be added if the bailiff comes out to visit you. This second fee is £235. As you can see, communicating with the bailiff is important. The amount you have paid to the council could have been split between them and the bailiff, as such there could still be a small amount in council tax due - which could then mean that further action is a possibility.
