Afternoon all
My mum's 60th is looming down on me - 3rd of Sept so not far away - arrghh! I have been kindly 'nominated' to organise everything by my sister and dad!! Anyway, does anyone have any money-saving tips for me or just ideas in general for a 60th? I love my mum to bits and would give her the world but, as always, cash is tight. I should also mention that my mum will (deservedly) expect a memorable day as its a big milestone!!
Help!

Hi hueygeorge. Read you loud and clear but struggling to come up with anything until we know a bit more about your mum. Could you maybe do a "trip down memory lane" day? Take her to her old school, places she liked when she was a child, previous homes, previous work places, somewhere she enjoyed on holiday? Treat her to a meal out when you are there etc...?
You can buy a book on Amazon called "Dear Mum...from you to me..." by Neil Coxon (about £8.50 ish). Your mum details all the things about her life, memories and family to give to you to keep as a record...you could maybe do that together before her birthday to get an idea of somewhere she might like to revisit...or buy it for her birthday and fill it in together on the day as something to do?

I like the book idea - thanks! The memory lane idea is really good but we live in Yorkshire whereas mam was born and bred in Southampton! As for things that she likes, hmm - knitting, cooking, rambling, gardening, moaning!!! Scrub that last one!! I'll have to put my thinking cap on but I'll definetely check out that book.0

Give her a box with 60 presents in it - don't panic they can be tiny and/or free - eg a photograph that brings back memories, a packet of her favourite sweets, a scratchcard, a sample of shampoo from a magazine, a postcard of somewhere she's been and loves etc. If you have kids get them to draw a picture of her and put those in.
If you've got time and internet access you could always start to trace your family tree and print it out for her.
For my boss's 60th we did a full This is Your Life with a big red book (actually a folder with notes about him and photos etc) and did the full thing with guests he hadn's seen for a while. Someone video'd it so he could watch it again.
Asda do nice cakes where you give them a photo and they print it on the cake - perhaps one of her baby photos if you've got any.
You could also do a scrapbook of her history and other things relating to it - go on the internet and find out what was happening on the day she was born, the day she got married etc What were the number one songs, what films were in the cinema, what was on TV etc0 -

Thank you - you are a star!! The box with 60 pressies in is a fab idea!! In fact, I'm going to paint a wooden box so she also has the keepsake factor, then try and stuff 60 pressies into it! I'm also going to look at the history of her birthdate - newspaper headlines, songs etc. Ooh so excited now - have tons of ideas! Just needed a kick-start!! :j0 -
Know this maybe a little late, but for my Nan's 60th i looked at what she collected or had keepsakes of. My Nan collects china pottery, so i bought her some from the Willow Tree range from the UK Gift Company, but they do all sorts. And you could put that in with the 60 presents box (brilliant idea by the way, which I fully intend to incorporate for my mum's 50th this year).
Hope it all goes well anyway xxxx:cool:0 -
My mum is 60 soon too! To celebrate we are all going to Mallorca for 4 days..leaving this thursday! But her birthday is not till August 1st! In reply to your question, she may like a old photo put onto a canvas so it can be a momento on the wall.. (my mum wants one of these, of her mum who died in 1991). You can also get photos printed onto cushions.0

Just to mention that my colleague is doing something similar for her brother's fortieth, and for anything too large to fit in the box she's taking photos of them... otherwise you may end up with a box the size of a truck...!:pOH OD - £100.00/£100.00 Joint OD - £100.00/£100.00StepChange: £10,057.670
