Well, the WHO recommends no solids at all (only milk) to at least six months. To achieve optimal growth, development and health, WHO recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life.
Under six months food really needs to be blended/mashed to be suitable. Once a child reaches 6+ months they are generally better at coping with adult food and can manage 'finger food' although as others have pointed out do watch salt etc. Otherwise, baby should be able to eat very similar food to you.0 -
Am wondering why the OP did not breast feed given her budget and that she wants the best for baby?
Its hard work and all they do is feed but great benefits are reaped
Ijust wrote a massive reply on E numbers and artificial additives and the flippin thing took me so long I was asked to log in again and the reply has gone!!! grrrrrrrrr
Wash fruit in vinegar. It removes pesticides. You just dont know if organic really is organic these days and even if it is, by putting it in a plastic bag you are putting chemicals into it
Some E numbers are antioxidants ie E300 ( Vitamin C) and E160 (beta carotene) and very good for you
Avoid sugar free drinks like the plague. They contain aspartame and ascefulcamek both carcinogens and so banned in america.
Calpol also contains aspartame. Ask your doc for medinol. It is sugar free but contains a lesser of 2 evils, saccharinI can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. I can be hurtful I can be purple I can be anything you like..Gotta be green gotta be mean gotta be everything more...0 -
I had a similar issue with my DS (now 2 1/2), he was huge lol and ate like a mini horse!
I found that Gina Ford's 'Contented Baby' books helped me out, she wrote one which is specifically for weaning and feeding baby up to about 18 months. The recipes she gives in there are enough for either freezing in mini portions or for you and baby to enjoy. Great thing about them is that she gives recipes that don't use many ingredients, still taste good but don't cost the earth to make.

do what we all did a long time ago. Our children grew up very healthy. Eat healthy yourself by cooking from scratch and mush up a bit of what you eat
all this separate and expensive baby food is psychological nonsense0 -
I'm with Kittie all the way!
And ditto Discodee re: sweeteners. We avoid aspartame in our house.
And don't get me started on Gina F - avoid her at all costs too (stupid woman)0 -
Had to read back to see who Gina F was then! Thought you were insulting an MSEr PMSL
And in my long reply I mentioned cooking from scratch, breast feeding, avoiding artificial colours/sweeteners. Avoiding salt, feeding veg fruit and giving water to drink. Babies do not have a sweet tooth. They are given it. It amazes me when i see teeny kids being given mars bars and bags of crisps to keep them quiet! If you dont give kids these things they wont develop a taste for them. Our kids have sweets as a treat not as the norm. They're 12 and 8, both drink water and never leave a scrap of food on their plates. people are amazed at the fruit and veg they eat.
They've also neither of them ever had antibiotics or had an infection, and despite them being 6 weeks and 4 weeks prem are both tallest in their class! lol(And top of their class, too!)
Good wholesome nutricious food is best. And before that breast milk. It IS hard. All they do is feed feed feed, but it's free, its the best and it's well worth it. I fed both of mine for over a year. It aged me by 10 yrs but seems to have benefited them LOLI can be brown I can be blue I can be violet and sky. As soon as my son was eating 'normal' food, I just blended portions of whatever we were having. It tastes so much better than the jars and weans them onto 'proper' food rather than the blandness of jars and is loads cheaper. I was obsessed with giving him organic food also but tbh now he's seven I look back and think it wasn't so important - I think giving wholesome homecooked food is more important and making sure they get all the nutrients they need. Just wondered, why no to Gina F
Has she done something really awful I'm not aware of lol her routines helped me immensely through the first year with DS (was on my own and am not the most organised person at the best of times!)0 -

I did breastfeed for the first 3 weeks but was advised by my HV to top up with formula as I couldn't keep her fed. Then I eventually switched completely to hungry baby formula to keep her satisfied.
We do use Medinol for my 5 year old when needed as Calpol used to contain a red colouring which made him hyper. Don't know if it still does or not.
And as for aspartame - I've read loads on that and wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. It's horrid stuff and should be banned in the UK!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

even though we are all well aware of the benefits of breast feeding i don't thinkits fair to query why the op isn't breast feeding. it is very hard and not everyone gets the help they need.it can be a very hard time and you will do anything anyone suggest to satisfy your lo or with the right support and help it can be v rewarding and satisfying for mum and lo. i have had both experiences twice and would never wonder why someone wasn't breast feedingLead us not into temptation...
just tell us where it is and we'll find it....0
