  • You can send them by email or text. Its so people can get time off work or arrange holidays etc
  • We are sending out "save the date" cards, because we're getting married next September and wanted to give our guests the opportunity to book time off work, book accommodation and such like.

I've set us up a wedding email address and a facebook page, and as such I'm not in any great rush to get the invitations out.

They cost me next to nothing, and every little saving helps.

We're getting married on 31 December 2015, which is a Thursday. I think pretty much everyone we need to invite knows the date but we're going to send 'save the dates' in our 2014 Christmas cards, to save on postage, so that people who need to can book time off work, travel etc.

If you're getting married on a popular date or a weekday then I think its worth putting people on notice in advance so they can put the date in their diary and book time off work, travel, hotels etc if needed.

If you're worried about the cost what about sending them by email? Just have one printed or made, scan it in and send it out - it'll cost you almost nothing.
  • We did emails, because we are getting married in the middle of the summer holidays, and even 18 months in advance, when told of the date one relative said it was a good thing we told them when we did as they were about to book an extended family holiday - probably involving 6 or 8 of our guests! Also my 'step cousin' (I've never met him) is getting married on the exact same day as me would you believe. Early notice of my wedding has allowed my aunt and cousins to consider which wedding they will choose to attend (thankfully there are only 4 people invited to both). I'm guessing if my aunt hadn't had the date of mine until 3 months before, she'd have already committed to going to her step son's. This way she has the choice!

I agree posting them, particularly to a large wedding (over 100 people at ours) is going to be expensive. Email was a compromise for us, I literally posted 2 - to both sets of grandparepnts who don't use email.

We did by email and most our friends liked it much better that way as they find it easier not refer back to it (when receiving other invitation, usually by text or emails) and make sure that it wasn't the same date. Our friends would have probably end up losing the hard copy card after a few weeks (as I have done myself!).

Like you we also found that we didn't know the postal address of many, so it was the opportunity to ask for it to send the actual invitations. And of course, as you've said, it was a lot cheaper that way.
  • We are doing save the dates for the older members of the family who aren't really up to date with email and associated tech. I must admit though for friends etc who are more tech savvy we've done an e-card save the date style thing. We get married on the middle of ssummer and it was more to make sure poeple were aware of the date before booking ho9lidays etc. If we weren't getting married in the middle of the summer season I may well not have bothered.
Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!?
  • We've just received our save the date magnets from etsy and I'm thrilled with them. We have lots of friends who are academics as OH is a lecturer so we felt that save the dates were worth it as we are getting married first Saturday after Easter 2015.
  • My cousin just sent round save the date cards using easyprint - they are doing 250 post cards for free! She and her h2b took a picture of their daughter holding a sign with the date written on it and had it printed on the front of the postcards. She then wrote on the other side some other details (if you wanted to save time I suppose you could print out some labels and just stick these on). She didn't post them all, just the ones that were going to people she didn't see often, for everyone else she just handed it to them. Or if you work in an office and it has a franking machine you could put the ones you need to post through that (although I am not sure if that's really allowed!)

I can't post the link to the easy print post cards as I am a new user but if you google "250 free post cards easy print" it will come up.

Hi there, why not create your own wedding website, we just set ours up with wedding hand it was quick and easy to do and all your guests can RSVP via the site, as well as get all the directions, food choices etc for the day, definitely worth checking out!
  • We're definitely going to have a wedding website.
The venue is quite fiddly to get to so will require a lot of instructions. Better to put it on a website than fill an invitation with loads of writing.
Also good for hotel links and other info.
Plus, if people lose their paper invite, all the info is still on the website!

I like the idea of getting the free postcards printed. I'm going to check that out.
I'll be able to give most of them out by hand so won't really cost much to do.
