Debt Cold Caller

Not sure if this is the right place but I've just received an automated telephone call which described itself as a free government information call (or similar wording).

It says there has been a change in legislation and if you have more than £5000 debts and a regular income you could get your debt pretty much written off. You then had to press a number to get through to an advisor.

Don't know for certain as I didn't press the number, but I suspect this is some company trying to cash in on debt consolidation - just really wanted to warn people to be on their guard.

Anyone else experienced this?

Good to know that people are kind enough to warn others about this, just ashame someone will probably fall for it somewhere along the line

I've written the number down but it doesn't seem appropriate to advertise it.
    Is an 08448 number.

If it is breaking regulations, then I am happy to report it if someone tells me where.

    Hi

That is not a premium number so you need to contact http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/

I think I would use the phone in the first instance.

    Obviously report them to TPS

    And the financial Ombudsman.

    Hi,

There seem to be quite a bit on the phone calls folk have received about the posibility of wiping out your debt (Scripted Below), whether the calls are legal, premium rate or not, etc, but not about what/how these companies can get the debt written off. Has anyone any other useful info on what's on offer? or how it works?

Here are the exact word of a callminder recording we discovered on our home phone.

You may qualify for a little known and almost unbelievable solution.
If you qualify you will only have to pay what you can comfortably affort and the rest including all the interest will be written off.
If you have debts of £5000.00 or more and have a regular income you qualify for taking advantage of the new government legislation which wipes out 75% of your debt.
All you need to do to see if you qualify is press one on your phone to speak to one of our advisors free of charge, the call will just take two minutes and it could change your life so press one on your phone now.

Obviously it was a recording so pressing one was of no use.

What exactly is it all about??? Hey Mr Martin Lewis... what are your thoughts on this please?

    Eagerly waiting any feedback

Seems they are trying to get people to sign up for IVA's. There is a lot of new companies springing up doing this and obviously they don't think it is enough to advertise on TV. IP companies will pay for referrals for an IVA and ofcourse it is the debtor who pays for it in the end with higher fees. For an IVA shop around or contact National Debt Line, CCCS or Payplan for a full assessment.
