Happened to see Kirsti's Fill Your House For Free programme yesterday.

She mentioned places called paint exchanges where appearently low cost house paint can be obtained.

I have not heard of paint exchanges before, and so was wondering if there are any in or around Belfast?

Thanks. :)

    My personal view from experience.
Unless you have a LOT of time on your hands and are happy to apply 4 or 5 coats of paint, stay away from "Low cost paint" in general.... i.e. anything out of DIY shops etc. Go to a proper paint centre and get the good stuff, 1 or 2 coats and job's done

Painted our sunroom with B&Q own stuff, took 3 coats and 2 tubs. Within a couple of months of the kids rubbing their hands up it, moving furniture about and the dog doing what ever dogs do when you're not there, it looked awful.
Repainted it with some stuff from a proper decorators centre (near tullycarnett), 1 coat less than half a small tin and it looks perfect several months later.

East Belfast Mission have a project called Repaint. You can donate unwanted tins of paint which they then sell on for £1 a litre. Worth checking out on their site (don't think I can paste a link - it's ebm dot org dot uk)

I assume that you have to have partially full tins of paint to exchange in the first place. Can you do anything with those paints to use them all up?

I've never heard of them :s

But you can pop into the trade stores like Crown Paints and buy cheaper than the big sheds like B&Q.

I used the trade paint on my new house, MUCH better quality than the retail stuff you get and works out cheaper too. You don't need to be a tradesman or anything, they sell to the public.

I used the one on Stockman's Way.

The refound store in kennedy centre and park centre sell old tins - they look like they're all well used though.
  • Why not try re:store in Connswater or the Park Centre? In fact, I think all of their stores sell half-full paint tins for £2 upwards, and they're all common, trustworthy brands. I am not sure what their quality checks are like, but I don't think paint 'goes off', does it? :)

Worth popping in, if you're nearby. Good luck! (Big Kirstie fan too, by the way.)

Don't know if you have sorted your paint yet? I was at our recycling centre today and they now accept paint for this scheme.
