As of the end of this month, we will have given up our rented property in Devon and she will be staying with her parents (rent free) until she finds a job in London. Will this be a barrier to getting a mortgage?
So long as you're earning, the fact your wife doesn't have a job won't prevent her from being named on a joint application with you. However, it will have a massive impact on the amount the two of you are able to borrow. Lenders can't base affordability on a salary she doesn't actually have!
The location issue is just that it's implausible that your wife would live in London and work in Devon. She either has to be maintaining (and paying for) a home in/near Devon, or she's doing some kind of crazy daily commute by aeroplane. Either of those options would involve a lot of expense, and so they'd both hit affordability and hence the amount you can borrow.0 -
My wife would be living with her parents, rent free in Devon.
We've been living apart and commuting to see each other at weekends for the last 14 months. That would continue, with the bonus that she has to come to London for work frequently so would be able to make the trip for "free" around 50% of the weekends.
