Well I couldn't find that fact on the HMRC website. Please provide a link as my skills are clearly not up to the task.0 -

"Corrected" by an assertion but perhaps you could provide an HMRC link.0 -

Me neither, although I did find lots of non-hmrc/gov sites that said it. Perhaps it's one of those urban myths people repeat as the gospel truth because they heard it from someone else.LittleVoice wrote: »Please provide a link as my skills are clearly not up to the task.
I would like a link too0 -
How much money are you talking about? If you're only talking about the odd fiver or tenner here and there, HMRC will simply not be interested in what you're doing.
People that make comments that they state as if they are fact are those that get others in trouble. Anyone who is selling items as a business, not that I'm saying the OP is, should be declaring it. I don't actually pay tax on my earnings, only Class 4/Class 2 NI contributions, because of the amounts that I declare, but I still declare it and would be fined once caught if I didn't.
The 3 month registration was listed when I registered as self employed with HMRC, I could back date it by 3 months, later than that meant I would have had to speak to HMRC direct and would potentially be fined as well as pay penalties on anything I owned. This doesn't mean you HAVE to register within 3 months.
Quoted direct from the HMRC website:
When to register
It's best if you register with HMRC as soon as your circumstances change. The latest you should register is by 5 October after the end of the tax year for which you need a tax return. The tax year runs from 6 April one year to 5 April the next.
Found here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/register.htm
In tax related circumstances rather than asking on a forum, where you get numerous 'facts' quoted it is best to just call them, so perhaps do so on 0300 200 3310 and keep a record of when you called them for your own protection. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I think the point is HMRC don't confirm it. There are plenty of web sites that say it, but not HMRC, their site just says register as soon as possible.
I wonder why, if it is a rule, HMRC are the one site that doesn't display that rule?
Of course it could be on the HMRC web site and I just failed to find it. So perhaps you could point me to it?0 -

What I'm trying to do? Well establish whether what you stated -"Sorry but if you are selling stuff you have made you need to register as self employed. Within 3 months. You are a business." [my emphasis] - is true.
I didn't claim it was a fact but you still seem to think it is true and therefore one can only presume you think it is a fact.
You are not doing the legwork for me because you must now realise that what you suggested was the case is not the case now. If it were, HMRC would not hide that.
You had one supporter who has not been able to provide a link.
Read the current HMRC link provided by katykicker and see whether you still want to tell others that there is a three month deadline.0
