Debt Collectors and Ex Partners

I split up with my ex about 2 years ago, we were both in a lot of debt at the time and I've finally got my life on track, paid most of mine off and started to rebuilt my credit. He clearly hasn't as on a nearly daily basis I'm getting bombarded with letters from various collectors to the tune of nearly £12k.
I have lost track of who is supposed to know he doesn't live here any more, but I don’t have a forwarding address for him (Despite me asking him) if a collector does turn up on my doorstep, will they listen to the fact he no longer resides here? He’s not on the electoral role, not on the tenancy agreement, not named on any utility/council tax bills.

If a debt collector does turn up then they have no legal rights anyway, but just tell them he does not live there.

If a bailiff turned up then again telling them he doesn't live there and has not done so for 2 years should be sufficient. But it you think there is a danger of bailiffs coming (i.e. if they have sent a letter giving notice, or if you have seen court claims arriving) then it may be useful to keep a copy of your tenancy agreement to hand to show them.

What are you doing with the letters? Are you returning them to sender? If not then I would do so.

You say you have lost track of who is supposed to know - surely you want everyone to know he doesn't live there?

Did you ever have any joint financial accounts with him? if so then it also may be worth checking your credit files and if he appears as an associate then file a notice of disassociation.

I do want everyone to know, but the same companies keep cropping up,( mostly Moorcroft) I think because I can't give them a mail address, they're just sending the letters here anyway.

I'll start returning to sender, I had been saving them to pass onto a mutual friend who is still in touch with my ex.

We used to have a joint account, but I had my name taken off that shortly after we split. He's not associated to me on my credit report.

First and foremost, debt collectors have no more rights than you or I do, do not confuse them with bailiffs, a bailiff is instructed by a court, a debt collector is not.
Debt collectors can be ignored, there is nothing they can do, if any do call (very rare) simply inform them he no longer lives at this address, if they wont go quietly, call the police !!
I would suggest any further post you get for him, you mark "not known at this address" and return it to sender.
