Can you get a decent 2 seater sofa for £300?

Options
Want a decent looking 2 seater for around £300, less would be nice :D

I would want to get at least 12 months out of it before it looks like a sack of (rude word)

I have a cat so don't want to spend too much because he'll trash it in no time and i will also probably be moving within 12 months and may just leave it when i do and buy something else again to avoid lugging it around.

Any recommendations?

Ikea do some 2 seaters starting at £1450. They're good as a make, so just choose the one that you can live with for a year.

In my world .... £300 is actually a GOOD budget. That's my current budget for a sofa that I expect to last me 20 years.

Price on this changes with the colour .... the cream one's only £120 http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S69010619/#/S39875378

... at least I think that's the sofa price. I find these things very confusing and it might be the cost of just the cover .... although (in my world) that'd just be nuts.

These three are definitely sofas. http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=sofa&category=products&range_subcategory=10661&range_chapter=10668&min_price=145.0&max_price=300.0&sorting=price

Bit dinky though isn't it :D Think i looked at that before.

With Sofas it seems that if you want something really 'decent' you have to spend about £600 to get a tasty 2 seater.

With £300 there seem to be some stylish faux leather ones around but i get the feeling the faux leather is the one that peels off in no time at all. Unless they have improved.

If anyone knows a good faux leather i would be interested.

Try Ebay and Preloved. We paid £60 for a 2 seater and a 3 seater. They are in really good nick and still going strong 18months on

Tesco sofas are pretty cheap - my parents bought a 3 seater and 2 seater from them and they only expected it to last a year or so but 4 years on and it's still doing fine.

Also consider 2nd hand places, I got an excellent deal locally on a 3 & 2 seater leather sofa and it was really good quality all for £350 including delivery. It's worth checking out 2nd hand shops in well to do areas as some of the stuff you find might not be that old at all - plus you can generally haggle too!
Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190 :)
Comp Wins 2014: None yet :(

I paid £20 for two 2 seaters, when sorting my niece out in her first own place.

They were in reasonably good condition, and came from eBay.

    I don't want to sound like a snob, but i don't think i'd like pre-loved stuff :D

Ultimately i think i will end up buying a new faux leather 2 seater, as they all seem to be in the 250 - 350 ball park, and come 12 months later, when my cat has re-designed it, i think i'll feel like i have had my moneys worth.

The IKea one is a great price but i don't it looks that comfy.
  • Hi,

i would not advise buying faux leather if you have a cat.

ours is generally pretty good, but for some reason, he loves clawing at absolutely anything that's faux leather...and unfortunately, it shows up instantly.

the ikea sofas on the otherhand, he claws at a lot, and it doesn't show up at all :)
  • We bought our last sofa via ebay and it's been fantastic! Essentially brand new for a tenth of the full price.

Check out Facebook "stuff for sale" type groups in your area. In ours, there's a guy who regularly has seconds for sale. We got a pair of brand new three-seater sofas for £370! One has a tear in the fabric on the back (about six inches long), but the back is against a wall so it doesn't show. They're lovely quality. Almost as good as our other suite which is from Harveys and cost £1,400 for two three-seaters.

Not sure where he's sourcing his stock and probably best not to ask... I saw them advertised, asked if I could go take a look, and he said it was awkward for people to visit his storage unit. He brought the sofas round in a van so we could take a look and decide if we wanted them! Hubby loved that - far better than being dragged around the shops as far as he was concerned. :D

See if there's someone similar where you are...

(I'm in north Essex, just in case you're in the area)

Might be difficult, but try checking sofasworld, cargo or achica, with a bit of luck you may come across a nice new sofa on a budget.

Ebay and Gumtree are also an option for second hand ones.
