scale in steam iron

This may not be the right forum, but the knowledge here seems to fit best with my query.
I have a Phillips steam iron. It has a "calcium collector" which I rinse every time I refill the water tank. However, it still occasionally shoots out a burst of scale. I do a lot of sewing, and am fed up with having to clean scale off fabric.
My tap water is "low-medium" hardness. The manufacturer's information tells me not to use softened water (which I have) because the salt content is too high. I could of course, buy distilled water, but given the amount I would use, I'm reluctant ( but do accept that i may need to)
What do others do?

I use white Vinegar to clean scale out of my iron.I just fill with Vinegar and leave it on for a while then keep pressing the steam out.0
