N1CPC form received - can I still prevent getting a CCJ?

I hope someone can help as I've read so much information I am confused.
I have received the N1CPC form from Northampton. I accept I owe the money (around £6800) but the sols have added over £400 in court charges which seems excessive compared to info I have found.
Over many years I have had threatening letters but they had never come to anything. I had a letter from the Sols to say they wanted income and expenditure but I hadn't been paying for a number of months due to low income and having to replace essential items eg cooker and parts to car to pass MOT to keep working. I should have written to them but stupidly didn't.
I couldn't give them up to date info as I am awaiting a tax credit update and was going to write to all creditors as soon as I had it, also noting that I no longer have a cheque book and to ask for bank details to make direct bank payments.
Unfortunately the N1CPC form has been applied for a week too soon and I now don't know what to do.
I have seen some comments on a number of sites that if you return the form and try and sort it with the sols with a payment offer they may not take the case further and I could avoid a CCJ.
To do this do I ask for a delay on the court paperwork or do I fill in the forms as if it is going to go through the courts and attach a covering letter asking for consideration prior to the courts? I don't want to get the court side of it wrong and end up with payments I can't meet.
On another site I also saw that at this stage it is a CCC which if the sols accept my offer wouldn't go any further but on other sites it says if I accept the debt and return the forms it automatically becomes a CCJ. Which is correct - or is it that they will go for the CCJ as it gives them more security that they will get their payment?
I'm sorry this is waffly, but I am really upset and unsure what to do.

There are some legal guys here that know their stuff, but it is not a legal forum.
If it was me I would post up on Legal Beagles or the Financial Legal Issues forum on CAG. You will get dedicated advice there.
If it was me I would also check their legal right to claim the money before throwing the towel in.
Make sure you acknowledge the proceedings in time. And get advice about how to get them to prove the details in the Particulars of Claim.
You can always change your approach, but by starting off defending you cover the bases.BSC No 248
