I agree that loans etc. should be repaid. However lenders should treat their customers in difficulty with fairness and honesty, sending a letter that is apparently from a separate company is IMHO neither.
I find the scale of this issue alarming "RBS had established an in-house solicitor, Green & Co, to help it collect debts. It also used the brands Triton Credit Services, Unidebt and Tamarisk Debt Management to fool customers into thinking they were dealing with outside agencies.
Last year alone, Triton issued 423,000 letters to 119,000 customers, while Green & Co sent out a further 29,000 letters."Proud to have dealt with my debts, became debt free on 03/11/2011. Repaid £54,723.41 LBM May 2006.

I think so. If a debt has been passed on then communications are legitimate.
I had a letter from Abbey National telling me that Robinson Way would be handling the debt in future, a letter from Robinson Way was received a little later. All that needed to be done was a change in payee details. No stress at all.
A letter was received about one of my Halifax debts from what looked like another company. During a phone call to them the lady eventually told me that this other company was part of the Halifax parent group. It was a cynical ploy to try and get higher payments, this was despite me being in a DMP with Payplan and having annual reviews.Proud to have dealt with my debts, became debt free on 03/11/2011.
