I've noticed a lot of the lines already exist. It seems that it is a basically introducing a service that stops at them all rather than a few trains that happen to stop at a few stations on the way into zone 1. It is much needed and introducing more service and connections is good. Increasing density and frequency of outer parts of inner London and outer London has been needed.

Presumably the solid lines are bits of line that already exist and the hollow lines are the only new connections that are needed between stations. The challenge will be that many of those lines are probably already running close to capacity and probably need a whole new signalling system to allow them to run trains closer together.

That's what I was thinking too. It should mean not too much building work. The lines up around NW London have a lot of capacity at least, I don't know about the rest. I expect a new signalling system is more than likely needed.

Yes this is how it works nowadays. Announce a new shiny bit of rail infrastructure, hide the fact that most of it is just existing lines.

When the London Overground orbital railway was 'created', all they did in South London was destroy the South London Line, which looped from Victoria to London Bridge through South London.

So now if you live in Clapham or Denmark Hill, instead of having a useful line to two major London termini, easing pressure on the Northern Line (the most congested tube line of all), you can now get to very useful places like Rotherhithe and Peckham.

    Progress!

  • I wonder how long it would take to go all the way round, and if anyone would want to.

It would be useful to me to get quickly to Carshalton Beeches and Kingston, but why would I want to go to Thamesmead?
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
