No mortgage review until...

Just wondering has anyone else encountered this? - Our current mortgage deal is coming to an end in September. I have just rang the Halifax, who we have had our mortgage with for the past 28yrs, to enquire what deals would be avaialble to us. However they will not even discuss my options until we switch our current method of payment from standing order to a direct debit. I have faithfully paid my mortgage via standing order for the last 20years. Why are they insisting I change at this stage? I am really annoyed with them and cannot help but think is this a sign of things to come - we have not have a review since the 'crash'.
