Am I in trouble?

Hi All,

Now please before you leave me any sort of abuse I am fully aware I was in the wrong here morally - at the time I let my emotions get the better of me and did a stupid thing but hear me out...

I was with my ex partner for 3 years. we lived together in a rented property from one of my family members. I had very bad credit due to an ex partner getting us in a lot of debt (and not telling me about it) which meant I was issued with a CCJ. Anyway I sorted all that out cleared the debts ect but still have a negative on my credit file. Anyway my now ex got me a bank account in his name and a mobile phone contract as I was unable to do so. we had two catalogues - an Argos and a Very account both in his name. Anyway the relationship began to break down (he was mentally and physically abusive- also tried it on with a friend of mine) and it took me 8 months before I managed to break up with him. When we did break up I was forced to leave the home we shared even though the house was my Mothers and the home I had grown up in. He took 3 months to leave the place. During this time he paid my mum no rent no council tax was paid and he treated it like a squat. my mum and gran had to pack his boxes for him just to get him out. As you can imagine I was furious with him and what he did. So I did something wrong. I had used both them before I knew the log ins and decided to use the very catalgoue. I ended up spending £1200 in total. I then of course panicked when I realized what I had done and tried to pay it off but it got too much and suddenly interest was applied and the total hit £1800. Of course he eventually found out about it but he is overseas at the moment so he hasn't spoke about it to me yet. I am going to pay if off with my credit card but I just need to know am I in any legal trouble? I'm worrying so much I don't know what to do please help!!!

Legally speaking, he's the one in the wrong since he applied for the credit and gave you access to it. Yeah, it could be construed as theft I suppose, but I doubt anyone would be interested in pursuing it since it is his name on the credit agreement. Technically, you could simply wash your hands of the whole thing, deny all knowledge and there isnt much he could do about it. Morally speaking, you clearly know what you should do, which is pay it back, but legally speaking, nothing to do with you.
Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

My advice is "do the right thing because it is the right thing".

You shouldnt have taken out a bank account in someone else's name, nor taken on a phone contract. I hope you learn from this.

Likewise your ex should never have offered this to you, but I guess this post isnt for him. But just in case he is reading.

I would pay back the money, and consider the lesson well worth the cash.
