    re getting to Southampton.

If you are coming from up north then there is a train that goes from Newcastle right down to Southampton in one sweep - assume there is numerous places along this route for train ticket splitting.

If you are going from the North West then its the Bournemouth train - you can join this at Stoke if you want to or we join it at Crewe.
On train time tables it says to change at Wolverhampton which is a bit of a faff so instead we change at Stafford, never change at Birmingham New Street, nightmare - so plenty of places to split tickets along that route.

When I checked a few weeks back I found we had 2 trains going Crewe to Southampton, straight through with no changes - one at 6.30 in the morning and one at 6.30 at night.

We tend to go the night before - various train delay dramas over the years. We generally stay in either premier Inn at West Quay or Etap. Premier Inn if I book a long way ahead I can get for £39 a night and Etap (Ibis budget now called) varies between £29 and £61. PI you get an hour of wi fi but Etap is free wi fi now.

not very glamorous but all we want is a comfortable quiet place to sleep and good showers within walking distance of the station, Next day we get a taxi to the port and we are booking in around 11.30 and on-board at 12

we have Ikea meatballs on the first night but we have a selection of places for breakfast

OK sounds very down market but we would prefer to spend money whilst we are on holiday and not the night before
