I've got a vax and I think it's fab. I just use it in bathroom and kitchen, but it is so quick and the floor dries almost instantly. One fill of the water chamber is enough for 3 or 4 cleanings of both rooms. No chance I'd go back to a mop and bucket.

Love mine, use it on wood floors and tiled floors, clean takes less time than dragging out a mop and bucket, no smelly mop, and less time to dry.
Mine is the black and decker mutli floor one, with a hand held attachment, I love mine so much for cleaning I brought a little hand held one for every day jobs. But I don't like chemicals as they irritate my skin .

I have a Beldray 5-in-1 and whilst it does clean the middle of the floors nicely it doesn't get into the edges and corners properly!

I used it on the tiles in the bathroom for the first time last weekend and blimey what a kerfuffle that was - back to scrubbing for me!

So whilst we're on the subject (and because I'm going to go back to the old fashioned way) what's the best non-steam mop to buy?

I had a steam mop and thought it was useless. Recently purchased a vax hard wood floor cleaner and it is amazing. My floors sparkle. It does take more effort as it is as heavy as a vacuum cleaner and needs properly cleaning afterwards and not cheap. (Half price in Argos £100) but I def have clean floors now.

Love mine. I echo Shegirl, a cleaner is better. Bathroom sparkles. Mine is a polti.

I bought a vax steam mop. Used it a few times, its not great. Sure it heats and steams and what not but it doesn't properly clean the floor. I have gone back to a bucket and cloth and clean the floors on my hands and knees ( I find this cleans better than a mop) I think the steam mops are a gimmick.

my mum gave me one but it is one of the ones designed like a cylinder cleaner i like it i don't have any other mop now i like the idea of steam as is sterilizes as well as steam i find it easy to use. I only have carpets on the stares and in bedrooms all other rooms and hall are wood or tiled so i use it a lot.

I was wondering the same at the OP, but I just want a hand-held one for awkward places in our shower cubicle. At the moment I use a toothbrush and bleach, but I'm not happy with how clean even that is getting it.

What does anyone think of hand-held steam cleaners?

I actually love mine. It's a VAX & I would never go back to a mop & bucket...!

they are heavy and really hard work to do higher up bits .. I have arthritis in my hands so really struggle with holding the trigger and having to lift and move it too.. so much easier to get out my flash and a microfibre cloth
