Which job option is better financially.

Hi there,

I have recently taken on a job. Its about 40 minutes away in the car, costing about £7ish return trip plus £2.80 in a toll cost. I earn about £8.72 and hour and in three months it will raise to £8.97 - before tax.

I am employable, but I don't know if the job is really in my best interests financially - especially considering I can get a job for around £7.50 an hour which is about 10 minutes away and my car is not really reliable and I cannot afford to replace it or continue to repair it. If it is pennies between the jobs I would take the job closer, but what do you think is an acceptable margin.

Is there anything else financially I should consider in my calculations as to which option is better? Has anyone any advice to this?

Kind regards

Based on 40 hours per week a wage calculator site says at 7.50 you will take home £260.82 and at 8.97 you will take home £300.81 per week.

    £9.80 travel * 5 = £49 so £300.81 - 49 = £251.81

So the 7.50ph job gives you £260.82
and the 8.97 job gives you £251.81

Not counting travel expenses for the 7.50 job.

Are they both the same hours? Do any have more chance of overtime? (if you would like it) Are any more likely to have pay rises/promitions in the future? Do either have perks? Eg pensions etc. As it stands looking like your traveling time & costs outweigh the higher wage.
