Tax related quandry...

Hello, :j

I was hoping someone could give me some advice/steer me in the right direction...

I was working PT at a school as a teacher, and PT at a supply agency. I was lucky enough to be offered a full time contract by my school, so I handed in my noticed at the supply agency.

I received an email confirming they received and accepted my resignation. I was assured I would be removed from all their books. A year a later I was still receiving the odd text/missed call from them asking if I was available to take on a booking!

I contacted them again and was assured I wasn't on their books! Pah! The calls/texts stopped after, which was positive... but then I received a letter from HMRC with my new tax codeS :( I then twigged I hadn't had a P45 from them (my stupid fault!):embarasse so chased them up for it, and they were adamant they'd sent one out to me... but agreed to send me a digital version.

My question (we got there in the end! Thank you for sticking with it!) is, how do I notify HMRC that I need to change my tax code? (My current code for 2014/2015 is for someone with two jobs)

I have been on the HMRC website and filled out an 'incorrect code' form, but it doesn't seem substantial enough, I think I was expecting to have to attach my P45 to the form...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

It is your right to have your allowances allocated where you please so just tell them you want all your allowancs allocated to your present job REF...........

Much more interestingly, do you have your earnings for each tax year for all your jobs, you just may be due a refund.

PS I'm not happy with the description lovely.

So what is your tax code then please.

If they were taxing you on two jobs, you would have 2 tax codes, not just one.
One would be normal and the other would be XXX BR

The HMRC would have got a copy of your P45 sent from the agency, they would send one to HMRC and one to you. Obviously yours has got lost.

Anyway, what tax code do you have now.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You are quite correct, I do indeed have 2 tax codes for 2014-2015, which are: 970T and 29L.

I did think they should have sent them out to HMRC, but I naively presumed they would be able to sort out the correct tax codes after they received my P45.

    And for 2013/14?

It is HMRC who send out tax codes to everyone who employs you under a PAYE scheme, if the agency haven't sent in a P45 Hmrc aren't to blame and neither are you. Hower, you can be proctive in correctinr the situation, what you need is a code of 1000L for your main job and BR for everything else.

The simple answer is to phone HMRC and ask them to unsplit your tax code and allocate the full 1000L tax code to your current job.
