Mortgage Application

Do multiple mortgage applications ruin your credit rating? I'm not thinking of applying yet, but in a year or so.
What other pitfalls might there be in applying? I know having a lot of debt isn't good, but how about the fact that I haven't used a credit card in years? They should know how good I am at paying off debt as I have been paying my mortgage for 8 years.
Will the fact that I have overpaid so much on my current mortgage stand me in good stead, or just not matter to mortgage companies?
I have two children. I know this will affect how much I can borrow, but just wondered if there was anything else which adversely affects the mortgage you can get?
