Company moving location.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could offer me some advice on something I could be faced with fairly soon. I've been working for the current company I'm with now for almost 4 years and the building we operate of is falling apart in all honesty. There has been a number of murmurs and rumours that we'll be seeking a new location; no great surprise in all honesty as the company is outgrowing it's current home.

My role is at the head office and we only have the one location which is where we're based now. Very strong indications suggest we'll be moving over 20 miles away which isn't a huge amount of difference but I was wondering what is the norm with something like this? I am getting to a point where I am set buy a home for the first time but being held back because of this.

My questions mainly are:
1. Whats the minimum amount of notice that can be given for a relocation if there even is one? [I've checked my contract and all paperwork from joining and there is nothing in there at all]

2. Do you have to accept the relocation?

3. If you don't do you get any kind of redundancy pay if you choose not to move with the company?

I appreciate this will vary company to company; just looking for a general rule of thumb I suppose. Career wise I feel I'm at a big point in my life and I don't want to be caught short and back on the unemployment scrapheap which I absolutely want to avoid.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated by this newb! :A

I believe that if the location change is less than 50 miles or under 90 minutes then you cannot ask for redundancy as it would be deemed reasonable for you to move with the company.

I'm not sure on notice but I doubt it has to be alot but someone better will know.

What does your contract say? There isn't any specific time or distance set for what is unreasonable, only that the relocation should be reasonable.

If it's not reasonable, then redundancy may apply if there is no offer of an alternative, or of compensation.
