A new exhibition that’s opening at The Lowry in Salford this summer looks at the past, present and future of children’s broadcasting at the BBC. It explores more than 90 years of BBC Children’s, from the very early days of broadcasting with the launch of Children’s Hour in 1922, right up to today’s multimedia shows.
Visitors will be able to see iconic items, footage, puppets and props from the BBC Archives and private and public collections around the country – from Sooty, Sweep and Soo, Otis the Aardvark and Blue Peter’s Tracy Island right up to the time-travelling grandfather clock from Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures!
CBeebies fans will be able to take a turn at reading a Bedtime Story, meet the Veggies from Mr Bloom’s Nursery and practise Makaton with Mr Tumble, as well as seeing lots of puppets, from the original Clangers and the Playschool toys to current stars like Rastamouse.
The exhibition will open with a public launch event at the Lowry in Salford Quays on Saturday 19th July – with free Swashbuckle-themed activities for little ones, and performances from the naughty pirates, Cook and Line. No tickets required, just turn up on the day.
The exhibition is free to visit. It opens at The Lowry in Salford from Saturday 19th July, and will run until Sunday 12th October.
